World Parkinson’s Program Refugees Initiative

Toronto, Canada, December 10, 2015 --(PR.com)-- World Parkinson’s Program announces the launch of a series of educational campaigns for raising awareness of Parkinson’s disease and dementia in Syrian refugees arriving to Canada. “In the special Syrian refugee clinics set up by Canadian physicians, World Parkinson’s Program will provide educational literature for Parkinson’s disease and other related conditions such as dementia, restless legs Syndrome and depression,” announced Armand Gilks, chair of World Parkinson’s Program. Volunteer physicians and other healthcare workers will volunteer their time to help care for the Syrian refugees. Conditions such as Parkinson’s disease may go under diagnosed and may be attributed to old ageing. Head trauma may be another risk factor for Parkinson’s disease. In regions of the wold with decreased health education and awareness, many patients may not be aware of various symptoms and early signs of Parkinson’s disease.

Gilks emphasized the serious need to detect such cases in the beginning, and refer them to neurologists so that the treatment may be initiated before their condition becomes advanced.

Gilks mentioned that World Parkinson’s’ Program will conduct Parkinson’s seminars in the areas housing the refugees. World Parkinson’s Program already provides a series of renowned brochures about Parkinson’s disease in fifteen languages, including Arabic, which are used in more than fifty countries around the world. Refugees who are doctors, nurses or healthcare workers will be of great value for the World Parkinson’s Program to facilitate these campaigns. World Parkinson’s Program is a Canadian based non-profit organization which was founded by a Canadian Parkinson’s expert, Dr. Rana, in 2008. World Parkinson’s Program aims to help facilitate diagnoses, provide care & essential supplies free of charge to Canadians and disadvantaged citizens suffering with Parkinson’s disease globally.
