)-- The Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) today announced it is seeking legal management industry feedback on a proposed set of codes intended to standardize how processes within legal support operations are organized, identified and defined. ALA’s proposed Uniform Process Based Management System (UPBMS) is designed to improve understanding of the increasingly varied administrative and operational processes that are required to support legal operations.
“To date there has been no universally recognized standard that improves legal operations’ understanding of how administrative and operational processes are identified, organized and performed within their organizations,” said ALA Executive Director Oliver Yandle, JD, CAE, “the ALA UPBMS creates this standard.”
The ALA UPBMS is not intended for a single purpose. Rather, they are intended to provide a foundation of process categories and descriptions that can provide guidance to legal management professionals, consultants, and analysts as they develop or conform insightful tools and techniques that have universal application.
The ALA UPBMS is intended to foster the advancement of the legal management profession by facilitating efforts to:
• Standardize widely adopted business practices within legal operations
• Promote the acceptance of a standard categorization that defines all aspects of work within legal support operations
• Clarify legal support operation roles and responsibilities and improve internal organizational structures
• Collect data and develop meaningful performance metrics needed to quantify legal support operations
• Improve processes and support innovation within legal support operations
“A common application of the UPBMS is to improve efforts to track and analyze time devoted to legal support operations.” said ALA Project Manager, William Mech. “In this context, the intention of the ALA UPBMS is to minimize multiple interpretations and options for coding, monitoring and analyzing administrative time.”
ALA invites legal management professionals to review and comment on the UPBMS and built a robust peer review portal for this important project. Review and comment on the UPBMS at: http://upbms.alanet.org/
