Famous Pacific Shipping Provides Full Logistics Services for New Power Plant in Sri Lanka

FPS Sri Lanka has been appointed by West Coast Power Ltd, a subsidiary of Lanka Transformers/Sri Lanka Electricity Board Group, the largest power supplier in Sri Lanka, to handle the majority of the freight logistics services required during the construction of a new 300MW combined cycle power plant located at Kerawalapitiya in Sri Lanka.

Hong Kong, Hong Kong S.A.R., January 18, 2008 --(PR.com)-- FPS Sri Lanka is a member of the Famous Pacific Shipping Group, the fast expanding Asia-based NVOCC and freight services supplier, and will provide a complete package of services in connection with this appointment. This will cover all documentation, Customs clearance, loading and unloading of LCL traffic, container, breakbulk and bulk cargoes associated with the project.

Very substantial volumes of bulk, breakbulk and containerised cargo will be carried until the middle of this year.

Gihan Nanayakkara, Managing Director of FPS Sri Lanka, says: “FPS Sri Lanka is proud that we have been given the vital responsibility to provide logistics support for the massive quantities of material needed to kick start this incredibly important infrastructure development.

“We handled the first shipment of 980 tonnes of breakbulk cargo, cleared and delivered, within 36 hours, a staggering effort by all members of the FPS Sri Lanka team. The management of FPS Sri Lanka look forward to this challenging opportunity and we look for co-operation from other FPS members to facilitate and support the carriage of freight from around the world.”

The Sri Lanka power project cargo agreement comes at the same time as Famous Pacific Shipping members are developing a significant track record in project cargo forwarding as a means of diversifying from the group’s NVOCC business model.

Comments Iskandar Zulkarnain, FPS Group Chairman: “Project cargo forwarding is becoming an increasingly important and active niche for our members to develop. We are looking to build on business skills gained providing our first-class NVOCC services and migrate any relevant skills to this new direction. In turn, we are learning the different dynamics and will quickly bring to the marketplace a project cargo forwarding package our customers will value.”

The West Coast Power Ltd move comes 18 months after FPS Sri Lanka and Ceylonco SembCorp Integrated Logistics (Pvt) Ltd agreed to seek synergies between their respective services in order to offer a total logistics package to project forwarding customers involved in the movement of project cargos and capital equipment in Sri Lanka.
