Adolescent Literacy Targeted with "Critical Literacy" Series: Making Inferences and Figurative Language

Portland, ME, January 20, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The latest release by Walch Education is a two-book series that gets to the roots of adolescent literacy issues. Critical Literacy: Making Inferences and Critical Literacy: Figurative Language target students’ reading skills in grades 6-12.

Why do struggling learners have trouble reading? Contrary to popular opinion, the issue is not articulating the printed text. Rather, it is understanding and processing the ideas expressed by the words. The Critical Literacy series meets this challenge with resources that provide struggling readers with direct, explicit instruction and guidance.

Authored by noted curriculum specialist Susan Brooks-Young, each Critical Literacy book contains 20 reading, vocabulary, and writing lessons organized around core content areas.

Critical Literacy: Making Inferences
• Helps students comprehend, analyze, and connect the ideas behind the words
• Strengthens ability to make evidence-based guesses, recall relevant details, and analyze text and non-textual clues

Critical Literacy: Figurative Language
• Helps students understand, analyze, and apply figurative language
• Focuses on alliteration, analogy, hyperbole, idioms, metaphors, paradox, similes, and other figures of speech

The Critical Literacy series recognizes that there are many ways to strengthen literacy, including vocabulary acquisition, metacognition, writing, and reading comprehension, to name just a few. But the heart of the matter is the students’ ability to understand what the words are trying to say, by making inferences, as well as how they are said, through figurative language.
