Don Schoendorfer to Appear on "New Day Northwest" on Monday, October 3, 2016

Seattle, WA, September 30, 2016 --( Dr. Don Schoendorfer, Founder and President of Free Wheelchair Mission, will be a featured guest on KING5 television’s New Day Northwest on Monday, October 3, 2016.

Don Schoendorfer is a biomedical engineer who makes his home in Santa Ana, California with his wife, Laurie. They enjoy spending time with their three daughters and two amazing granddaughters. He has an undergraduate degree from Columbia University and holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from MIT.

About two decades ago Don turned his God-given and MIT-developed engineering talents to solving the problem of immobility in developing nations. There are over 100 million people with disabilities in the developing world, many of whom are poor and isolated. The causes of disability range from diseases that have been eradicated elsewhere, to injuries from land-mines and war. For many of these people, medical aid is simply not available - adaptive equipment is even scarcer. Dr. Schoendorfer devised an answer to the need for mobility: a low-cost, high-durability wheelchair.

The GEN_1 wheelchair was originally made of a standard white plastic lawn chair and two mountain bike tires mounted to a steel frame. The design has since been refined and is now made of more durable materials that can stand up to the rigors of life in the developing world. This innovative solution to a pressing problem can be manufactured, shipped and delivered at a cost of just $80.00 USD.

In 2010 Don introduced the GEN_2 wheelchair: an evolution of the iconic GEN_1 design, which is designed to be a more adaptable, but still low-cost, version of its predecessor. In late 2015 FWM began worldwide distribution of the GEN_3 wheelchair, a foldable version of the GEN_2. Both GEN_2 and GEN_3 received FDA clearance for sale in the USA, though FWM has no intention of doing so. Since 2001 over 950,000 wheelchairs have been given to people who desperately need them in 93 countries worldwide.
