Union Institute & University’s Criminal Justice Online Program Helps California Officers Advance

New online program gives police officers the flexibility they need to continue their education.

Sacramento, CA, January 26, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The recent advancements in Union Institute & University’s criminal justice programs in the Los Angeles and Sacramento centers continue to strengthen the already popular degree track – considered by most law enforcement professionals as one of the most practical and respected programs for continuing their education.

When Adam Christianson, Sheriff - Coroner for the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department in Northern California wanted to advance in the ranks from deputy sheriff to sergeant to lieutenant with the Sheriff's Department, he learned he had to have a bachelor's degree, and he completed most of his degree online. "I could have been promoted without the degree, but I had to be working towards a BA," says Christianson, about the Sheriff's Department. "Law enforcement in California is still meeting the needs of the community but it is focusing more on education."

In Southern California, it is also becoming more important for law enforcement professionals to have a degree. Lieutenant Raymond Foster, an advisor and faculty member for the Los Angeles UI&U’s criminal justice program says: “(UI&U) provides the structure and flexibility police officers need to go back to school. The new online program is academically sound and learner centered.”

UI&U President Roger H. Sublett sees the new program as a continuation of what it has done for more than 40 years. “Union Institute & University has historically focused on adults seeking relevant and meaningful education that not only fits into their busy lives, but also provides them with the knowledge and confidence to advance in their careers,” he says.

The new online program promises accelerated degree completion, “but not at the cost of engagement with faculty or with current trends in law enforcement,” says Sublett.

Dr. Ellen Marshall, coordinator of UI&U’s criminal justice online program, says that, unlike other criminal justice online programs offered at universities, every member of UI&U’s faculty is either a retired, or current law enforcement professional.

“We’ve been there,” says Marshall, of the faculty. She earned three degrees (including her doctorate) from UI&U while serving as a police officer in Delaware. “We know what the learners are going through so we can provide great advice and great guidance.”
