)-- A coffee expert from Aroma Bravo recently talked about the positive effects of coffee aroma, particularly on the brain. It was revealed that the smell of roasted coffee beans alone can immediately cause the brain to perk up.
“Everyone thinks that it’s the caffeine that keeps you alert, but coffee actually contains lots of antioxidants and active chemicals that stimulates our olfactory nerves - which in turn send signals to our brains to keep our minds fully awake. I think it’s really interesting how the aroma of coffee can have such a physical effect on us,” said the Aroma Bravo expert.
The coffee expert also revealed that a group of international researchers have successfully studied this sensory phenomenon a couple years ago. The smell of medium roast Colombian coffee beans were presented to adult male rats in order to discover the effects of coffee aroma on their brains.
A batch of sleep-deprived rats were compared to those that had enough sleep, then they were compared to other rats that were not exposed to coffee aroma at all. The results were telling.
The sleep-deprived rats that were exposed to coffee aroma experienced different activity levels in 17 genes of their brains. There was also a change in their brain proteins that could help them cope better with stress.
“Of course the olfactory systems of humans and rats are not the same, but the study seems to explain the reason why people naturally perk up at the smell of coffee. While more research needs to be done, the positive effects of coffee aroma is undeniable. It wouldn’t hurt to smell some freshly-roasted coffee beans in the morning - and maybe even indulge in a good cup or two to start your day,” the coffee expert concluded.
