TEDx Speaker, Candra Canning, Offers New Perspective on the Emotion of AWE

In her just released TEDx talk “Discover Backyard AWE!,” Candra Canning, who has been doing leadership training and team building in the outdoors for 25 years, outlines why it’s important to cultivate AWE in company culture to spark innovation and strengthen purpose in work and life. AWE is the emotion that literally causes the brain to stop and adjust to what it is experiencing which ultimately promotes both physical and mental benefits.

Salinas, CA, May 25, 2017 --( TEDxSalinas has just made available, the video playback from Candra Canning’s talk, “Discover Backyard AWE,” recorded on February 25, 2017 at the Steinbeck Institute of Art & Culture. The independently organized event, licensed by TED, featured other expert voices, under the theme of “Ideas for our Future.”

“AWE is the emotion you feel when something stops you in your tracks and literally takes your breath away, creating a heart-thumping sensation that naturally resets your perspective,” said TEDx speaker and Founder of Live Bright Now, Candra Canning. “When you are intentional and allow yourself to savor it, the emotion of AWE sparks innovation, communication and teamwork,” stated Candra, who has been conducting leadership development and culture programs for executives and companies for decades. “Cultivating AWE in a company can strengthen the culture and re-engage teams. It is a powerful antidote to burn-out.”

A recent client of Canning’s, a senior level executive, who has successfully built several high value companies, experienced the power of AWE during a 3-day intensive session. His life at home and work was transformed so dramatically, that he has continued weekly coaching sessions and created his own “Backyard AWE” ritual. He has hired Candra to bring the power of AWE to his entire company, and had this to say:

“Everyone should experience the magic and power of AWE! I am more engaged and present at home and work… It changed my life. Period.”

Science is backing up the power of AWE as well. The new neuroscience of AWE, being studied by Dr. Dachar Keltner of UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center and other institutions across the country, substantiates the mental, emotional and physical benefits of actively cultivating AWE experiences. AWE therapies are also being used with positive results with veterans and children who have suffered post traumatic stress.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of topics. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The TED2014 Conference takes place in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast in neighboring Whistler. TEDGlobal 2014 will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

TED's media initiatives include, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; and TEDBooks, short e-books on powerful ideas. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
