Germany to Lead Developments for Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability

SMi Reports: Germanyís leading defence and research agencies as well as key OEMS will present at SMiís 3rd Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability conference this November.

London, United Kingdom, August 29, 2017 --( Germany has a long and proud history of developing world class military organisations and equipment. To highlight these key contributions, Germany’s leading defence and research agencies as well as key OEMS will present at SMi’s 3rd Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability conference this November.

Military Focus
Lieutenant Colonel Eike Sinzig and Lieutenant Colonel Karl Heinz Boenke of the German Army will discuss the strategies for future development of armoured vehicle survivability. Perception of the current and future operational environment and its associated threats will be examined. They will also talk about doctrine and concepts of operation as a starting point for protecting soldiers and vehicles. Examples of protected mobility within the Bundeswehr will be given: light wheeled combat vehicles; BOXER, PUMA. Finally they will deliberate future plans for growth potential within the vehicle fleet.

Research Focus
Mr Gunter Fuchs and Dr Carsten Weidner of Bundeswehr Technical Centre for Protective and Special Technologies will talk about optimising signature management for vehicles and explore protective and special technologies. They will explain how thermal, visual, radar can be used to manage signature and minimise the chances of detection.

Industry Focus
Dr Ronald Meixner, Engineer Business Unit Protection Systems, Rheinmetall will provide key metrics for safe APS application and as well as examine the pros and cons of APS. In addition, he will talk about the system safety for deployment.

Mr Paul Berry, Senior Systems Engineer, ARTEC GmbH will discuss current and future capability development within BOXER. He will talk about modularity within the platform; current survivability technology and future plans for technology insertion

Dr Ing. Robert Bayer, Head of Department, Protection, Krauss Maffei Wegmann will explore the potential of delivering high levels of protection within the PUMA Infantry Fighting Vehicles. He will talk about platforms high level of blast and ballistic protection: approaches to developing the modular system. The Multifunctional Self-protection System MUSS will be discussed (softkill protection system against guided missiles). Potential for integration of hard kill active protection systems within the platform will be explored and finally he will answer the question: What is the potential for growth of survivability systems?

As the only meeting of its kind solely dedicated to this capability area, this focused conference aims to deliver a strong emphasis on emerging technologies and how these might be leveraged. As well as hearing the perspectives of senior programme managers from procurement and future land requirements, the meeting aims to ensure thorough participation from the leading solution providers currently at the forefront of innovation in the survivability space

Importantly, a key differentiator this year will be a dedicated pre-conference focus day on Active Protection System covering soft/hard kill active protection in detail. The three-day programme will cover the core areas of survivability in detail, exploring the latest platforms, vehicle architectures, passive/active protection, mobility, counter-IED, EW, un-manned/autonomous solutions, signature management and much more.

Featured speakers attending the main conference will include: Advanced Blast and Ballistic Systems, ARTEC GmbH, British Army, Bundeswehr Technical Centre for Protective and Special Technologies, Czech Military Research Institute, Danish Defence and Acquisition Organisation, DSTL, German Army, IMI Systems, IMP Castle Associates Limited, Israeli MoD, Krauss Maffei Wegmann, Lockheed Martin UK, NATO, Pearson Engineering, SOUCY DEFENSE, Swedish Defence Research Agency, TNO, United States Army, United States Marine Corps, US Army, UTC Aerospace Systems and Vetronics Research Centre.
