Back to School: MyEyeDr. Encourages Parents to Take Notes on Proper Eye Health

Ensure your student’s eyes are performing their best for academic success this school year.

Atlanta, GA, August 26, 2017 --( With back to school season around the corner, prepping your child for a healthy and successful academic year goes beyond shopping for backpacks, clothes and electronic devices. Today, students face new challenges, based on the shifting educational landscape and continued advancements in technology.

According to The Vision Council, more than 70 percent of Americans report their school-aged children spend more than two hours in front of digital screens each day. While more than 78 percent of parents are somewhat concerned about the impact of digital devices on their children, only 29 percent reported taking children for an annual eye exam as part of back to school preparation.

MyEyeDr. gives the download on ways parents can encourage students to prepare their eyes as they head back to school.

Arrange an eye-friendly workspace. Make it a fun summer project to organize a space in your home that optimizes workflow without straining your student’s eyes. Position the desk so that digital devices are sitting at least 20 inches from their face to decrease eye strain. Device screens should be angled slightly downward to decrease tension on the neck and back. Ensure the workspace allows for proper posture with a chair at a height that allows feet to be flat on the floor.

Schedule breaks. Parents should encourage children to give their eyes a break. Whether this be short and simple, incorporating the 20-20-20 rule by looking away from digital devices at an object on the wall, at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes; or breaking up the day with some time outside, limiting digital device usage can reduce the harmful effects increased exposure can have on the eyes. According to The Vision Council, children who play outside regularly are 23 percent less likely to develop myopia, or nearsightedness. Parents can even consider this a reward for children who have learned how best to manage their digital device usage.

Get the right tools for the job. Prepping your child for a healthy and successful academic year goes beyond preventative measures. Invest in the right lenses to correct vision and ensure academic performance. Consider a stylish pair of Zoobug frames, a London-based eyewear brand made just for kids, with special lenses to reduce digital eye strain, to complement your child’s personal style, while protecting their eyes.

Schedule an annual eye exam. Parents must adhere to an "every kid, every year" mantra for back to school eye exams. Headaches, clumsiness, decreased attention span and poor academic performance can all be related to vision impairment or not wearing the right prescription.

Lead by example. Set the example for your child by placing priority on your eye health and following these tips. Your child will be much more invested in their own eye health when they see you taking necessary preventative measures.

“Many parents wait to schedule a child’s eye exam when symptoms first arise,” said Dr. Artis Beatty, chief medical officer at MyEyeDr. “As you prepare for back to school, take this time to incorporate preventative measures by scheduling your child’s annual eye exam and updating prescriptions to pave the way for a successful academic year.”

Several industry organizations are working hard to educate parents about the importance of healthy vision. MyEyeDr. is proud to support the Essilor Vision Foundation this back to school season, who provides exams and vision correction for children in underserved communities.
