New Study: Good Dental Hygiene Helps Type 2 Diabetics

Bloomington General Dentist wants to educate type 2 diabetics of a new study that finds good oral hygiene helps them manage blood glucose levels.

Bloomington, IL, February 10, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Bloomington General Dentist Wants to Educate Type 2 Diabetics on Benefits of Good Oral Care.

Dennis R. Krug, D.D.S. of Cottage Dental Care, located at 2206 Cottage Avenue in Bloomington, today wants to make type 2 diabetes patients aware of a new study that finds good oral hygiene can help them.

According to the study published in The Journal of Clinical Peridontology, good dental hygiene could help diabetics with a type 2 diagnosis with managing blood glucose levels.

Led by Miquel Vinas, a professor of microbiology at the University in Barcelona in Spain, the study included 90 adults with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. The adults were randomized to one of two groups for 6 months. One of these groups received oral health instructions, as well as scaling and root planing, a non-surgical form of "deep cleaning" that removes tartar and plaque from the surface of the teeth and below the gums. The other group - the controls - received oral health instructions, plus supragingival removal of plaque and tartar, meaning that plaque and tartar are removed from above the gum line only.

The results revealed that the group that received the deep cleaning experienced significant improvements in managing blood glucose levels, while the control group saw no improvements.

“The main conclusion of the study is that the non-surgical treatment of periodontitis improves the glycemic status and levels of glycated hemoglobin, and therefore proves the great importance of oral health in these patients,” said Jose Lopez-Lopez, co-author of the study.

Krug and the team at Cottage Dental Care encourage anyone with questions about this study’s findings or other dental care issues to call 309-828-1463 or contact the office online.
