Operation Food Search Names Inaugural Fellow

Kathlee Freeman selected for the new Mary Ellen Gipson Fellowship.

St. Louis, MO, March 15, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Operation Food Search (OFS), a non-profit hunger relief organization, recently announced that Kathlee Freeman has been appointed as the first recipient to receive the Mary Ellen Gipson Fellowship.

Freeman is a PhD student at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Her research focuses on domestic and international food insecurity. She is also a communications consultant with the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security. She previously conducted research with the Interdisciplinary Center for Food Security, the Community Economic and Entrepreneurial Development Program at University of Missouri, and the Center for a Livable Future at Johns Hopkins University.

The new Mary Ellen Gipson Fellowship inspires our next generation of leaders to tackle the complex issues related to food insecurity, dietary health, and poverty. The Fellowship was established as a gift to OFS’ “Campaign to End Childhood Hunger” in the St. Louis region.

“As OFS operationalizes its bold plan to end childhood hunger in our region, we need fresh perspectives grounded in research,” said OFS Executive Director Sunny Schaefer. “Our staff and community partners will greatly benefit from Kathlee’s skillset and research abilities.” Schaefer added that “we are grateful to Dennis and Mary Ellen Gipson for providing this critical support to expand OFS’ capacity to make data-informed decisions.”

Founded in 1981, Operation Food Search (OFS) is a hunger relief organization that provides food and nutrition education. With a strategic focus aimed at ending childhood hunger, OFS empowers families with a range of programs and services proven to reduce food insecurity and increase access to healthy and affordable food. The agency helps feed more than 200,000 individuals on a monthly basis – one-third of which are children – through a network of 330 community partners in 31 Missouri and Illinois counties.
