Oklahoma City, OK, April 19, 2018 --(PR.com)-- On February 26, Independent We Stand, the national small business movement, kicked-off its third annual America’s Main Streets contest to help consumers, small business owners and Main Street organizations reward a deserving Main Street with $25,000 in cash and sponsor-related prizes. Stockyards City Main Street in Oklahoma City is among this year’s nominees.

America’s Main Streets play an important role in the long-term success of communities and help build a sense of place reinforcing this year’s theme: “Local Memories. Lasting Impact.”

“Our Independent We Stand America’s Main Streets contest shines a light on the pride business owners and communities take in their Main Streets,” says Independent We Stand co-founder Bill Brunelle. “We know small businesses on these Main Streets help them thrive and have a measurable economic impact. This contest is a chance to share those stories with people from coast-to-coast.”

Stockyards City and the Oklahoma National Stockyards may have once been a vision, but today it is where the west still lives. It all began when Oklahoma City businessmen met with the representative of the Nelson Morris Company of Chicago in May 1909 to propose building a packing house, if a $300,000.00 cash bonus and property concessions could be obtained. The beginnings of "Packingtown” became a reality and so did one of the most important building booms in Oklahoma City history.

By 1966 the Oklahoma National Stockyards had become the sixth largest market in the nation on the basis of livestock handling, representing $125 million in annual business. When the number of saleable cattle soared to 919,280 head in 1973, the stockyards took the nation's lead still held today.

“For more than 100 years, this historic district not only tells a story about agriculture, farming and ranching, but also paints a vibrant picture of how the state of Oklahoma was shaped from statehood. Friendly cowboy culture is our way of life, and we invite you to share this unmatched experience with your family and friends the next time you come to Oklahoma City,” said Todd Branson, Stockyards City Main Street Executive Director.

The first round of voting in the contest began as soon as Stockyards City Main Street was nominated and runs through April 22. All nominations and voting take place on MainStreetContest.com.

About Stockyards City Main Street
Almost forty years ago, a group of concerned citizens banded together to increase awareness and preserve the historic buildings and culture of Stockyards City. Realizing that a number of historic buildings in surrounding communities, including Oklahoma City, were being demolished, these visionaries sought to maintain the original western and agricultural flavor of the area and promote the economic vitality of the livestock, retail and commercial industries in Stockyards City. Stockyards City Main Street, a 501(c)3 Non-Profit organization and the first urban Main Street in Oklahoma, was formed twenty-five years ago and continues to carry on the legacy of the original leaders by representing more than 60 local businesses, two separate shelters, a fire station, one of the oldest continuously operating libraries in Oklahoma City, an F.O.P lodge, a music school and a young residential community with an elementary school within a half mile of the district’s east end. Our mission is to educate the public about our western heritage while preserving our history by creating a welcoming and active tourist destination area and promoting economic vitality and business success.
