University Students End Course with Photography Sale

Students in the University of Washington entrepreneurship program started a photography business to fulfill a program requirement. They are ending their class project with a final gala. Since they are liquidating their inventory, there will be great deals for art lovers. All proceeds go back to the Business Program at UW.

Seattle, WA, March 14, 2008 --(PR.com)-- This Sunday, March 16th at 3pm, University of Washington students are wrapping up their class project with a closing celebration and great deals for lovers of fine art photography. As part of the entrepreneurship program at UW, five students banded together to form a business marketing and selling the work of local Seattle photographer, Howie Goldstein. “We loved Howie’s beautiful photographs of local landscapes and flowers and wanted to share them with our community,” said Stephanie Toler, UW student and CEO of Howie Goldstein Photography.

The students aren’t the only ones to benefit from this endeavor either. “These students have done such a phenomenal job turning my hobby into a viable business. It’s been a real treasure to work with such talented individuals,” said Mr. Goldstein.

“I have learned so much from this program. I hope it lives on for a long time so that more students can benefit,” said Erik Roby, COO. The program began in 1994 with grants from Wells Fargo Bank and the UW Business School and has grown from the profits produced through the hard work and dedication of the university faculty and students. All profits from these businesses go back to the program to fund future student ventures.

This Sunday’s gala at Pho Viet Restaurant in the International District marks the end of their involvement with the business. “Our last step is to liquidate our inventory, so art lovers get the benefit of seeing some really great deals at the gala,” said Ben Resnick, VP of Sales. “Holding these galas is a nice way to get to know our community and to share Howie’s beautiful images,” remarked Khoa Pham, the CFO.

John Castle, Lecturer in Entrepreneurship at UW, observed “The point of the class is for students to immerse themselves in running a business. They take an idea and bring it to fruition with enthusiasm and intelligence, and learn what it is like to live like entrepreneurs.” Sheila Bui, Director of Marketing, believes that “This class has truly enriched my education with real-world experiences and challenges. It is unlike any other class I have taken at UW; it has enabled me to apply theories I have learned over the years to an actual business I helped create.”

Each class breaks into approximately four different businesses of the students’ choosing. Other businesses from this class are Journey Maps, mapmakers for motorcyclists; Memory Safe, personal film documentaries; Greenovations, green home consulting.
