Wakeup Call to Fight Higher Education Cyber Insecurity

The security of systems used in educational organizations on an everyday basis is far from perfect, according to a new whitepaper “A Brief History of Higher Education Insecurity.”

New York, NY, November 12, 2018 --(PR.com)-- EdGuards, a pioneer company providing the education sector with cybersecurity solutions, has prepared the analysis of the most notorious cyber attacks performed on educational institutions from their occurrence in 2002 to 2018.

Traditionally, a hacker hunts for massive archives of data, which include personal records of both current and former students and employees. As a matter of fact, attackers are coming up with new attack techniques and finding vulnerable points in systems in order to catch this data. For instance, in 2012, the PeopleSoft system of the University of Nebraska was compromised by a student. In March 2018, Iranian hackers were indicted for an attack on more than 300 universities worldwide. In general, the education sector experiences high percentage of espionage attacks.

Compared with other industries, the sphere of education meets the highest growth rate of attacks. In 2017, the total number of incidents in education grew up to 393 in contrast to only five in 2012.

Thus, the number of security incidents in education is booming, and ramifications are becoming more severe. In 2008, a hacker victimized Antioch University and gained access to nearly 70,000 records. 2,400,000 personal records of current and former students and employees of the Maricopa County Community College District were compromised in 2013.

The brief overview shows the particularities of Higher Education cybersecurity, gives an insight into the threatscape illustrating the risks educational organizations face, and derives the trends specific for each time period.

Keeping educational institutions’ systems secure is a serious challenge. “A Brief History of Higher Education Insecurity” helps to retrace incidents and make predictions in terms of future tendencies.
