Wade Day Rallies from a Lap Down to Finish 8th at South Georgia Motorsports Park

Bristol, TN, April 03, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Sometimes the finishing position does not reflect how good the team is during the race. Wade Day and the Highlands Motorsports team know that all too well. For the second race in a row in USAR Hooters Pro Cup action, Day had to make up a lap in order to salvage a good finish.

Day knew his car would be good entering Saturday night’s BFGoodrichTires.com 250 at the South Georgia Motorsports Park after a strong run at Lakeland where he made up two laps after suffering an early flat tire.

“We tested at South Georgia over the winter and the car was very tight. We came back to test on Thursday and brought a new package,” Day said from the Bristol, Tenn. race shop. “The car was loose Thursday and we knew it would be fast for the race.” Day was right, as the Lopez Wealth Management Ford paced the field during the day’s only practice session and then qualified third.

Early in the race, Day settled into fourth behind pole sitter Mark McFarland, Woody Howard and Trevor Bayne. The car developed a vibration and when the caution flew at lap 81, Day brought his ride onto pit road for tires where the team found a wheel to be loose. Four new tires allowed Day to march back through the field and by lap 150, he had brought his Ford up to second place, right behind eventual race winner Michael Ritch.

It looked like it would be a fight to the finish until lap 208 when Day’s car pushed up the track and spun out. While he didn’t make contact with anyone, the team decided to come to pit lane to put on fresh rubber for the final forty lap dash to the checkered flag. During the stop, a lug nut problem on the right rear cost the team a lap. “I don’t think we had anything for Ritch, but I think I could have gotten back to him with all the cautions. When I was in second place, I could pull up to him but as we put laps on the tires, he would pull away,” according to Day.

The USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series Southern Division returns to action on April 26th at the Concord Motorsports Park in Concord, NC, for the Black’s Tire & Auto Center 250. Day was strong at Concord in 2007 leading 38 laps after qualifying 20th. When asked about returning to Concord, Day said, “We didn’t qualify well there last year, but the car was great during the race. We will be going to Concord to test, and are confident that we will be strong. We are qualifying much better this year and I am really excited to get back there.”

The Elizabethton, TN, driver is in his second season as a driver in the USAR.
