Knowing is Peace: Using Entertainment to Save Lives; Atlanta Colleges Host Concert to Promote HIV/AIDS Awareness

Atlanta, GA, April 04, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Atlanta's College Students Join Together to Promote HIV/AIDS Awareness.

Georgia State University Housing, AID Atlanta, Atlantis Music Conference, Universal Music Group, LIFEBeat, NAESM, the HBCU Network, and many other organizations have partnered together to host the Knowing Is Peace (KIP) Festival on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Masquerade Music Park in Atlanta. The festival starts at 1 p.m. and is an all-in-one outdoor fair, artist showcase, and concert to help raise HIV/AIDS awareness among college students.

The Artist Showcase, presented by Atlantis Music Conference, will feature Atlanta's most talented unsigned artists from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Following the showcase, the concert kicks-off with performances by Rue Melo, Novah, Grammy Nominee Trin-i-tee 5:7, and special appearances by surprise guests.

The event is Free to students who get tested for HIV/AIDS. For all others, tickets are available online at ticketmaster.com for $10.

"Our goal is to use entertainment in a way that can ultimately save lives. With the outrageous HIV/AID statistics facing the 15-24 age group, something has to be done," says Crystal Love, founder of the Knowing is Peace campaign and an MBA Student at Georgia State University. "

Knowing is Peace, an ongoing HIV/AIDS awareness campaign, exists to address the alarming HIV/AIDS statistics. In the United States, over 40,000 people are infected each year and half of all new HIV infections in the U.S. occur in people under the age 25 and one-fourth in people under age 21.

"Our youth outreach program, ASK US, educates and attempts to address these statistics. We're excited about supporting an event that has the same goal in mind," says Ainka Gonzalez, Manager of Prevention Programs at AID Atlanta.

AID Atlanta is just one of the organizations offering free testing. Others include the National AIDS Education & Services for Minorities, Inc. (NAESM) , Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness, Brenau University, University of West Georgia, and Kennesaw State University.

"My students can quote the textbook responses about HIV and other diseases, but the reality is that they are not protecting themselves. The problem compounds when, out of ignorance, they assume they are HIV negative and engage in unprotected sex," says Michael Sanseviro, Director of Residence Life at Kennesaw State University. "It doesn't matter if the test result is positive or negative, simply knowing the results enables students to make the necessary lifestyle adjustments to maximize their own health and prevent potentially infecting others."

The campaign will continue throughout the academic year with a film festival in October, a song competition in January, and an "A" list concert the following April.
