San Francisco, CA, April 18, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Throughout Earth Day Week in San Francisco, California, the 7th Ecocity World Summit will be convening an international community of inspired change-makers. The Conference brings together the key innovators, decision makers, technologists, businesses, and organizations shaping the conversation around ecological and sustainable city, town and village design, planning and development.

Internationally recognized architect, artist, and philosopher Paolo Soleri will be one of the featured individuals who are addressing problems of the world's environment with thoughtful, long-range solutions that are truly sustainable, ecologically healthy and socially just. Soleri will contribute his concept of Arcology, a blending of architecture and ecology. The Arcology concept proposes a highly integrated and compact three-dimensional urban form that is the opposite of suburban sprawl, with its inherently wasteful consumption of resources and tendency to isolate people from each other and the community. Paolo Soleri will also be honored with an award at the event.

In 1970, Paolo Soleri launched Arcosanti, a construction project as a prototype Arcology in the high desert of central Arizona. It serves as a model urban environment that is striving to reduce humankind’s ecological impact on Earth. Over 6,000 people have participated in the Arcosanti educational Workshop Program and 60 - 80 residents now live and work there. World famous ceramic and bronze Soleri Bells are produced and sold on site. Arcosanti is also a tourist destination. Visitors may participate take a tour, participate in a silt-casting workshop, go bird-watching, take an agricultural tour, enjoy meals, and stay overnight.

Architect Jeff Stein, Dean of the Boston Architectural College and Chairman of Soleri's Cosanti Foundation Board of Trustees will also be speaking at the Conference. “Paolo Soleri has advocated for ecocities his entire professional career,” Stein says. “His understanding of the complex issues of architecture and ecology, connecting them as Arcology, have guided a generation. And now, Arcosanti, an ecocity in its infancy, actually exists; people can visit it, imagine its value, and take part in its construction through the famous Arcosanti Workshops. As they do, they'll notice Soleri’s architecture addresses far more than just the energy or materials that influence so-called “green building” these days; it includes complex social and evolutionary issues as well. His presence at the EcoCity World Summit should invigorate conference-goers to take serious action on ways we can reformulate our cities.”
