Online General Education Courses Provide Midland Lutheran Students with a Unique Jumpstart to Their Degree

Beginning this summer, MLC will begin offering general education courses online - the first step in the formation of its fully interactive, multi-layered virtual campus.

Fremont, NE, May 23, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Midland Lutheran College (MLC) believes in each of its students. Providing them with the proper skills and opportunities within their first years of college is an essential part of the school’s mission. That is why the college is expanding students’ available academic options through online education. Beginning this summer, MLC will begin offering general education courses online -- the first step in the formation of its fully interactive, multi-layered virtual campus.

Midland initiated its online efforts through a partnership with The Learning House, Inc. -- a comprehensive online education solutions provider located in Louisville, KY. Learning House specializes in assisting small colleges and universities develop and manage their online education programs.

MLC has always placed a unique emphasis on the importance of the early college years. The college considers the first year of college to be an influential time in the development of key skills, attitudes, knowledgebase and behaviors. With the special attention MLC pays to this development process, the transition from high school to college will be made more seamless and students, thereby, will begin on a well-supported path leading toward the successful completion of their degree.

The addition of online general education classes is a strategic step toward furthering MLC’s dedication to students’ first-year development. The online general education courses offer students many new opportunities, including the ability to build the breadth of knowledge so critical in major-related course, experience classes with dedicated faculty and the opportunity to complete their degrees in a shorter amount of time. These courses will help satisfy general education requirements for a bachelor's degree at Midland.

Moreover, this program intends to provide students with the ability to maximize their time and realize their academic potential without the requirements of a rigid, day-to-day classroom schedule. The online classroom brings all of the benefits of a traditional academic setting but is designed to assist students in meeting their educational goals from any location.

Midland’s online general education courses are formulated to provide students with viable course options in humanities, physical and life sciences ,and social and behavioral sciences, while also preparing students for a specific vocation and/or graduate study.

In short, Midland is eager to help motivated students jump start their college education. More importantly, MLC desires to provide students with the tools to build a strong foundation for professional development and life-long personal growth. Upon graduation, students will be well-prepared to tackle the job market, as employers value an applicant who demonstrates knowledge in a variety of domains (communications, critical thinking, problem solving, etc.)

The first year of college, MLC believes, is a crucial step in a student’s long-term development as a life-long learner and as an active, ethical participant in today’s diverse world. As a result, Midland places strong emphasis on the shared responsibility of both the institution and the student in the fulfillment of a positive first-year experience.

The online general education courses at Midland are available to students in all locations and of all backgrounds.
