International Profit Associates President Participated in BCLC Forum

IPA-IBA president participated in the Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) forum to identify key factors affecting private sector involvement in the Gulf Coast reconstruction process.

Buffalo Grove, IL, April 18, 2006 --(PR.com)-- International Profit Associates (IPA-IBA) President Gregg M. Steinberg participated in the Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) forum, “The Role of the Private Sector in Gulf Coast Recovery,” in New Orleans March 23-24.

The forum identified key factors affecting private sector involvement in the Gulf Coast reconstruction process, useful resources and strategies for future implementation, and the next steps needed to advance the economic recovery process. The forum was created for business and chamber leaders, government officials and disaster aid partners concerned about the economic recovery of the areas affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Featured speakers included the Honorable Sandy K. Baruah, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development; Maura W. Donahue, Chair of the Board of Directors, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and President of DonahueFavret Contractors Holding Company; Donald Powell, Coordinator for Recovery and Rebuilding in the Gulf Coast, Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and executives from area chambers of commerce and economic development agencies.

Conference topics included: the national interest in Gulf Coast recovery and reconstruction, which provided a personal and governmental view; an analysis of key issues affecting Gulf Coast reconstruction—reported from Booz Allen Hamilton; the national perspective on Gulf Coast reconstruction as seen by the local chambers; and the role of the private sector and jumpstarting investment in order to rebuild.

The featured session, The Role of the Private Sector, was led by International Profit Associate’s President Gregg Steinberg; Jeffery Finkle, CEcD, President and CEO, International Economic Development Council; Mark Pinsky, President and CEO of Opportunity Finance Network.

Steinberg discussed specific facts about small business, the impact of Hurricane Katrina and Rita and the need for a change in the methodology regarding how those businesses are dealt with in terms of the disaster. The discussion addressed the issue that 919,000 businesses were affected by the disasters and only 1.7% of them were approved for Small Business Administration loans. Of that 1.7%, only one-twelfth of those dollars had actually been distributed.

“If the government wants to help small businesses recover from disasters, they must eradicate the usual interagency and private/public sector bureaucratic red tape,” said Steinberg. “There must be a flexible, pre-approved and appropriated response plan customized to the needs of small business. Without it, the hope of preserving economic viability in disaster affected areas is slim at best.”
