Sea Islands YouthBuildStudents Travel to the Nation’s Capital to be Part of YouthBuild USA Conference of Young Leaders

Students from the Sea Islands YouthBuild Charter High School joined more than 500 YouthBuild student leaders from across the country in Washington, D.C. for the YouthBuild USA Conference of Young Leaders.

North Charleston, SC, July 24, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Students from the Sea Islands YouthBuild Charter High School joined more than 500 YouthBuild student leaders from across the country in Washington, D.C. for the YouthBuild USA Conference of Young Leaders.

"It was so important for our students, Brandon Gibbs and Stanley Frasier, to participate and become involved in this national conference," said Renee Chewning, Executive Director, Sea Islands YouthBuild. “They were able to share their experiences and discuss solutions for ending poverty in America with other students from across the country, while learning leadership skills and observing the political process in action.”

The YouthBuild USA Conference of Young Leaders brought together a select group of young people to construct a platform of the unique challenges facing rural youth; identifying the creative assets that young people offer and creating a context for how these issues fit into the overall framework of the national rural policy.

“During the 4-day conference we learned how public policy impacts our lives,” said Brandon Gibbs.

“But more importantly, we learned how we can impact public policy,” said Stanley Frasier. “It was all very cool, especially the trips around Washington, DC.”

Woven throughout the two-day gathering were numerous team-building activities and orientation exercises to help the young people feel acclimated to the conference and to their D.C. surroundings.

Sea Island YouthBuild students Gibbs and Frasier had the opportunity to visit congressional offices during Capital Hill Day, where they witnessed first-hand the legislative process and increased their knowledge of civic involvement and duty.
