Corporations Cutting Costs by Embracing Smaller Law Firms

To help with budget restraints, large corporations like DuPont are embracing smaller law firms that bring experience and expertise to the table, but at a smaller dollar point.

Milwaukee, WI, April 17, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Recent news has highlighted a new cost-cutting strategy - embrace smaller law firms as outside counsel at a lower price, reducing the cost per hour of larger firms and effectively decreasing budgets while maintaining expertise and experience. The most recent corporation to do this, according to Bloomberg, is DuPont Company.

The National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF) is pleased to back this strategy, allowing a more competitive and leveled playing field for all firms – including minority and women-owned law firms. “This is a step in the right direction for all parties involved.” Managing Director Yolanda Coly states, “Even in today’s reformed times, the majority of outside legal counseling is still given to large law firms that have successfully branded their names over the last hundred years. By taking a step back and looking at the people behind the names, companies can find the same expertise – if not more – in smaller law firms at a more budget-effective cost. When opting for smaller firms, we find that many companies also deal directly with the partners who cater to their direct needs.”

NAMWOLF, a national trade organization founded in 2001, offers a database of diverse backgrounds and cultures of minority and women owned law firms. The firms go through a rigorous, often 3-6 month application process, and only those reaching certain criteria are given membership. All NAMWOLF’s law firm members are AV rated firms.

In the mission to creating lasting relationships between corporations and diversified law firms, NAMWOLF created a Corporate and Public Entities Partnering Program. The program recognizes companies aiming to spend a minimum of five percent of their outside counsel budgets with certified minority and women-owned law firms. There is no cost to join the program. More than 150 corporations and public entities have enrolled in the program, including: PepsiAmericas; Aetna, Inc.; Volkswagen of America and Northwestern Mutual.

NAMWOLF will be holding its fifth Annual Meeting and Law Firm Expo in Chicago, Illinois from October 5-7, 2009. For more information please call 414-277-1139.
