McCormick Foundation Awards Grant to Support Prevail Health Solutions’ Effort to Help Returning Veterans

Chicago, IL, May 31, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Prevail Health Solutions LLC, a Chicago-based healthcare technology company, announced today that a $300,000 grant to The Veterans Corporation by the McCormick Foundation and Major League Baseball will fund a trial of Prevail’s evidence-based, cost-effective online intervention for veterans, VetsPrevailsm.
Funding from the grant, awarded as a part of the Welcome Back Veterans initiative, will support Prevail’s goal of addressing the mental health needs of returning Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) veterans.

Working with the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Medical Center and the National Economic Opportunity Fund, Prevail plans to utilize innovative, internet-based solutions to assist OIF/OEF veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression after deployment abroad.

Recent statistics indicate that over 300,000 combat veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from PTSD or depression – more than 20% of all returning veterans. A significant percentage of OIF and OEF veterans who suffer from these conditions do not seek or receive treatment.

In a recent study by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), nearly 60% of the military men and women interviewed cited stigma as a major deterrent to seeking treatment, fearing that traditional mental healthcare could have negative consequences on their career. Half of those interviewed reported that they feared others would think less of them for seeking counseling or treatment.

Prevail’s internet-based intervention will offer returning veterans effective mental healthcare without the stigma related to seeking treatment for combat stress. Prevail hopes that eliminating stigma will increase the accessibility of mental healthcare to veterans.

“Prevail feels extremely honored to have the support of both The Veterans Corporation and the McCormick Foundation,” said Richard Gengler, President of Prevail Health Solutions. “We’re grateful for the opportunity this funding has given us to continue to develop VetsPrevail and serve returning veterans. In the face of such great need, we feel very strongly that this funding will help enable us to support veterans lacking the assistance to make lasting, positive change in their own lives.”

The Welcome Back Veterans fundraising campaign, initiated by New York Mets Chairman and CEO Fred Wilpon and private citizens, is currently supported by Major League Baseball, Major League Baseball Advanced Media, and The McCormick Foundation. The Welcome Back Veterans initiative aims to increase public awareness of the many issues facing Veterans while raising funds to support the programs and services that aid Veterans in addressing those issues. Prevail is pleased to be a part of their ongoing efforts in these areas. Donations to the Welcome Back Veterans initiative may be made online at www.WelcomeBackVeterans.org.
