Six Time Pro Bowl Defensive Tackle La'Roi Glover Officially Announces Retirement

San Diego, CA, June 22, 2009 --(PR.com)-- After 13 very successful seasons in the NFL, Pro Bowl DT La’Roi Glover will hang up his cleats.

“I’m blessed that I was able to play this game that I love for so long. It has been such an incredible journey. The players, coaches, and front office staff in the cities I’ve played have all given me so many great memories.” Glover added “I still love the game with the same passion I had as a young player in high school, so I plan to always be attached to it in some way, whether commentating, working in the front office, or scouting. But who knows what opportunities await in the next chapter of my life.“

Glover started his incredible career at San Diego State University, and as a four-year starter and defensive captain, emerged as a leading tackle. Recognized for his impressive sacks and tackle record, La’Roi was named as the Aztec Outstanding Defensive Lineman, selected to the All-Western Athletic Conference, and invited to play in the prestigious East-West Shrine Game. A talented student-athlete, he earned a degree with a double major in public administration and sociology in 2008.

His diligence and athletic prowess would not go unnoticed as he was selected as the 34th pick in the fifth round of the National Football League Draft in 1996. Throughout his 13-year tenure in the NFL, Glover has experienced great success. He has played for several teams including the Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints and St. Louis Rams. During his career he has enjoyed such honors as being awarded six Pro Bowl selections, from 1998-2000 only two other NFL players posted more sacks than Glover’s 35.5 (Kevin Carter, 39.5 and Warren Sapp, 36.0), earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors an NFC-record three times while earning NFC Defensive Player of the Month for October, in 2000 was the only player to receive Player of the Week honors 3 times in one season and named NFL Alumni Defensive Lineman of the Year, 2000 New Orleans Saints Defensive MVP award; led the NFL in sacks in 2000 which is second in NFL history among defensive tackles, 2000 KC 101 Defensive Player of the Year, in 2002 earned all-Pro honors from College & Pro Football Newsweekly, Pro Football Weekly, and The Sporting News, as well as all-NFC honors from Pro Football Weekly, and is one of the few NFL players that has played 12 consecutive seasons without missing a game. Glover finishes his incredible career with 193 games played, 627 tackles and 83.5 sacks.

La’Roi is equally committed to his work in the community. He established The La’Roi Glover Foundation in 1999, which provides scholarships to students in San Diego area and assists community organizations that support childrens charities. In 2008 La’Roi joined forces with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri in the “Tackle the Issues” campaign. He also felt it was important to become a Big Brother as he feels strongly about the need for positive African American males to become more involved in the lives of young people.

These deeds have not gone unrecognized; La’Roi was named the 2000 New Orleans Saints "Man of the Year" and received their "Unsung Hero" award. In 2007, he was named the Rams 2007 Walter Payton Man of the Year and The Cartier Player of Excellence.

Glover’s immediate plans include getting his MBA, spending time with his wife Spring and their three children, and enjoying the possibilities of life after football.
