“Company” is Coming. Portland Production of Sondheim Classic Set for the Winningstad.

Stephen Sondheim's (“Sweeny Todd,” “West Side Story”) groundbreaking musical “Company” follows Bobby, a turning-35-year-old bachelor, along with his favorite couples and current squeezes, in a series of quirky and hilarious vignettes that inspire him to tie the knot before it’s too late. On Broadway, Company earned 17 Tony Awards. Now, this award-winning, Portland-based production brings a little taste of NYC to PDX with a show the Oregonian calls “Lush,” “Delicious” and “Recommended.”

Portland, OR, August 04, 2009 --(PR.com)-- A special Sept. 24 preview showing is fundraiser for the Oregon Food Bank
"Here comes Company." A production of Stephen Sondheim's groundbreaking musical “Company” opens Sept. 25 and runs through Nov. 8 at the Delores Winningstad Theatre in the Portland Center for the Performing Arts (PCPA; 1111 SW Broadway/503.248.4335). A special preview showing on Thurs. July 24 will be a fundraiser for the Oregon Food Bank, with just two cans of food required for admission. The cost for all other showings is $30 for the general public and $20 for students, seniors and groups of 10 or more. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com), PDXTix (www.PDXTix.net) and at the PCPA Box Office.

“Company” follows the odyssey of Bobby, a turning-35-year-old bachelor who has been unable – or more to the point, unwilling – to walk down the aisle…until now. A series of vignettes follows five of Bobby’s favorite couples, as well as his relationship with his three current squeezes. Each interaction, in its quirky and hilarious fashion, increasingly inspires Bobby to tie the knot before it’s too late.

The show is at once quintessential Broadway (winning 17 Tony Awards during multiple runs) and homage to dating and marriage in New York City. A Broadway-sized orchestra helps bring an even truer NYC theater experience to this Portland-based performance, presented by the local BrunDog Productions in association with JANE, a theater company.

The current production of Company follows a shorter run in spring ’09 (with the same cast and crew) at the Scottish Rite Temple in Portland. The original production was honored in the 2009 Portland Area Musical Theater Awards (PAMTAS) for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor (Andrew W. Foster), Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble, Outstanding Achievement by a Musical Director (Alan D. Lytle) and Outstanding Achievement by a Lighting Designer (Micheal Mazzola). Now, it is back by popular demand – and bigger and better at the beautiful Winningstad Theater.

As one of musical theater’s most noted composers/lyricists, Sondheim’s work is featured in musicals including Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Sunday in the Park with George and A Little Night Music. “Company” includes some of Sondheim’s most recognizable compositions, including "Getting Married Today," "The Ladies Who Lunch" and "Being Alive."
