In Nicetown, It's Not Nice to Not Give Back

Five Time Grammy Nominee Jazmine Sullivan and Comcast Corporation Join Nicetown CDC in Inspiring Nicetown to Highlight and Continue Its Tradition of Building Through Giving Back.

Philadelphia, PA, August 07, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8, 2009, the Nicetown Community Development Corporation (NTCDC) will hold its 7th Annual Give Back To The Community Festival and Evening Concerts from 12 noon until 9:00 pm daily at the Nicetown Park located 4301 Germantown Avenue in the City of Philadelphia. Violence Is A Health Issue is the theme for the Health Fair that kicks-off the festival on Friday, August 7, 2009 from 12:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Dance competition, fashion show, and a live performance concert featuring a diverse array of bands and acts from across the nation complete the day. Nicetown CDC's Annual Walk For Peace sets the tone for Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 12 noon. Children's play area, vendors, speakers, recognition of give back efforts, and live performance concert featuring five time Grammy Nominee Jazmine Sullivan makes this festival one of Philadelphia‘s weekend highlights.

The Give Back To The Community Festival is an effort created through community members giving back. The Give Back was started by the Nicetown CDC, with the generous help of Nicetown native Ms. Jade (Chevonne Young) who later pulled in her friends, also Nicetown Natives, Chris & Neef. At the time (Spring-2002) they were all hot on the charts, especially Roc-a-Fella Records’ Chris & Neef who came off of the "Roc-The Mic" Tour especially to Give Back to The Community in their neighborhood Nicetown. "I can not stress the importance of their contribution enough! They really were a valuable factor to this whole piece,” states Majeedah Rashid, COO for the Nicetown CDC.

The Nicetown Community Development Corporation (NTCDC) was organized in the City of Philadelphia in 1999 to improve the quality of life in the Nicetown and surrounding communities by establishing sustainable and effective socio-economic development initiatives. The Give Back To The Community Festival has been a catalyst for local economic growth and development, attracting thousands to the area while showcasing the why, the methods, the benefits and results of individual and collective giving back.

Every year the NTCDC awards outstanding community service at the Give Back. This year Comcast will make a very exciting and historical announcement regarding how Comcast will be giving back in the Nicetown area. Representatives from Councilwoman Donna Miller and Congressman Chaka Fattah’s offices will announce the development of Nicetown Court, a $14 million low-income mixed housing community. Philadelphia’s 107.9/WRNB’s Dyana Williams will receive special recognition for her impact and commitment as an entertainment industry pioneer.

The Give Back To The Community Festival planning committee consists of local Philadelphia community businesses and residents. Youth ages 12 through 21 have been hired to do street distribution via Jr. Music Executives and to help with stage management via J&R Grassroots. Nu Millennium Sound has provided professional sound, stage and backline for the festival for the past seven years and the list goes on.

The entire Philadelphia community comes together in a stance for change on Saturday, August 8th at 12 noon for the festival’s annual Walk For Peace with over 30 community and faith based organizations, City agencies, schools, and businesses leading this peace walk. The walk informs and mobilizes residents to be active stakeholders against crime and violence.

Performers from Philadelphia to Florida join five time Grammy Nominee Jazmine Sullivan in donating their talent to inspire others to be active stakeholders in their communities. Championed by previous Give Back Festival headliners such as Philadelphia’s own Kindred, Pieces of a Dream, and Hezekiah, the statuesque and beautiful Jazmine is all at once smart, sassy, insightful, down to earth and very real. Jazmine, as a songwriter, brings her own experiences and observations on life and love with vivid storytelling imagery to her songs. She explains her approach to songwriting: “I’m 21 years old, just coming into womanhood…It’s about empowering young women.”

Sponsors such as OARC, 100.3 The Beat, WRNB 107.9, Praise 103.9, First Trust Bank, Beneficial Bank, PNC Bank, Bank of America, PECO, Lomax Companies, AmeriChoice, Health Partners, Keystone Mercy, Local 332, Nu Millennium Sound, Hot Pot Cuisine and participation of the Mural Arts program are just some examples of the community effort and give back that makes the festival possible and helps produces long term growth in the Nicetown area.

Then, with Ms. Sullivan’s vocal range that never fails to captivate audiences and her Grammy nominated award winning hits, this local girl gone superstar will help make the Give Back 2009 the most memorable and exciting festival to date.
