Reef Safe Named Official Sun Care Products of the 2010 Professional Tarpon Tournament Series

Benefits of biodegradable sunscreens to be emphasized throughout professional tarpon tournament season.

Boca Grande, FL, February 24, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Benefits of biodegradable sunscreens to be emphasized throughout season

Recognizing the need to improve public awareness about the harmful effects of toxic sunscreens on coral reefs and marine life, the Miller High Life® Professional Tarpon Tournament Series (PTTS) has designated Reef Safe SunCare by Beach Buff® as the official sun care products of its 2010 series.

Reef Safe sunscreens, developed by Ormond Beach, Fla.-based Tropical Seas, Inc., are a new line of biodegradable lotions that won’t harm reefs or oceans while offering superior protection from harmful ultraviolet rays. Reef Safe SunCare by Beach Buff is the only product on the market that can scientifically substantiate a “reef safe” or “freshwater safe” claim.

"We are very excited about our partnership with Reef Safe by Beach Buff,” said Joe Mercurio, host of the PTTS television series. “As professional anglers out on the open water, we appreciate having the best protection from harmful sun rays, and we are firmly committed to preserving the habitat of the marine life that means so much to us."

Reef Safe by Beach Buff has been designated the exclusive and official sun care products of the 2010 PTTS and WPTTS events. The televised PTTS is the largest and richest live release Tarpon tournament series in the world, featuring five regular series events and one championship event. The three-event WPTTS is the largest women’s fishing series in the United States.

During each episode of the PTTS television series, hosts Joe Mercurio and Sheli Sanders will take a "Re-Apply Timeout" as the show goes to commercial break.

"We hope that taking time to re-apply our Reef Safe sunscreen during the shows will remind anglers and beachgoers to do the same the next time they're out in the sun," said Mercurio.

A Reef Safe tournament team and their eye-catching Reef Safe boat wrap will be unveiled prior to the season.

“We can’t wait for the tarpon season to begin, because we’re all anglers and fans of the show,” said Dan Knorr, CEO and president of Tropical Seas (www.tropicalseas.com). “We’re also excited about the opportunity to explain why biodegradable sunscreens are so important, and why Reef Safe by Beach Buff should be everyone’s sunscreen of choice.”

The PTTS is filmed and broadcast on the Sun Sports Network. The 13-week series will begin airing July 1. 2010 PTTS and WPTTS qualifying events will be held throughout May and June in Boca Grande, Fla.

About Reef Safe SunCare
Reef Safe SunCare by Beach Buff, manufactured and distributed by Ormond Beach, Fla-based Tropical Seas, Inc., addresses well-documented concerns about the damage done to coral reefs and marine life by the 4,000 to 6,000 metric tons of toxic sunscreens estimated to wash off swimmers into the oceans every year. By some estimates, this has led to sunscreen-induced bleaching of up to 10 percent of the world’s coral reefs. The Reef Safe sunscreens were subjected to a comprehensive series of independent laboratory tests to support and authenticate the biodegradability of the lotions. The research found that 99 percent of the material biodegraded in seawater within 60-80 days, while no evidence of toxicity to micro-organisms and other sea life was detected. The research also found that Beach Buff’s waterproof formula allows less than three percent of the product to come off in the ocean, which compares favorably to mass market brands that lose up to 29 percent of the product immediately upon entering the water. The American Lifeguard Association, which represents more than 10,000 active lifeguards across North America, has officially endorsed the Reef Safe product line.
