Adelphi University Presents The French Landscape Art Exhibition

Garden City, NY, February 19, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Adelphi University is proud to present The French Landscape, an exhibition featuring Associate Professor of Art Kellyann Monaghan’s paintings and prints inspired by the lush beauty of France’s landscapes. The exhibition will be on view from March 22 through April 17, 2011, in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery. An opening free reception will be held on March 29, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the gallery.

Professor Monaghan primarily paints the urban landscapes of New York City and Brooklyn. This group of work takes a new direction developed during a sabbatical from Adelphi University. During her time in France, Professor Monaghan resided primarily in the Toulouse region. She was inspired by the area’s beautiful landscapes, small medieval villages, and ancient farms and in contrast, the modernized forms and structures of contemporary life. She also attended the artist residency, La Muse in Labastide Esparbairenque, a village located in southern France, near the Medieval city, Carcasonne. At the La Muse residency, she developed a body of work based on the village surroundings situated on a mountainside. The village’s atmosphere of rich history and idiosyncratic architecture provided the ideal setting for working on site and en plein air (in the open air) during the day, as well as at night.

Her paintings of Paris relate to her work depicting New York urban landscapes, but also present a different contemporary urban setting. The paintings focus on crowded rooftops, small streets, and dramatic night-lights. A number of paintings are inspired by the sloping quarter of Montmartre.

The Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information about this and other upcoming art exhibitions, please visit adelphi.edu/artmuseum/exhibitions.
