Rebel Pilgrim Productions Wins Again with Indie Poker Comedy

Hitting the Nuts: the True Story of the Scott County Series of Poker (Rebel Pilgrim Productions), is a comedy farce that, according to the film’s website, aims to become, “the definitive comedic satire of the poker phenomenon.” It appears to be two steps closer to that goal after winning Best Feature Film in the Derby City Film Festival on February 21, 2011. This is a follow-up to the premiere at the Cincinnati International Film Festival on October 9, 2010, where it won for Best Feature Film.

Las Vegas, NV, February 23, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Indie Poker Comedy Wins Another “Best in Festival.”

Hitting the Nuts: The True Story of the Scott County Series of Poker is a comedy farce that, according to the film’s website, aims to become, “the definitive comedic satire of the poker phenomenon.” It appears to be two steps closer to that goal after winning Best Feature Film in the Derby City Film Festival on February 21, 2011. This is a follow-up to the premiere at the Cincinnati International Film Festival on October 9, 2010, where it won the audience award for Best Feature Film.

The film is an improvised “mockumentary” in the tradition of Christopher Guest (Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman). Using all up-and-coming improvisational actors, what the movie lacks in star appeal it makes up for in belly laughs. Joe Boyd, a Second City alum himself, is the writer and director. He is also the President of Rebel Pilgrim Productions, the company behind the picture.

“We had one goal with Hitting the Nuts,” he says. “We wanted people to laugh from start to finish.” Nuts accomplished that goal at both festivals. “We had over 500 people come to three screenings in Cincinnati and several hundred at Derby City in Louisville,” says Boyd. “One thing we know for sure is this film has tremendous regional appeal.” The movie was shot in the Midwest and has limited screenings to that area thus far. As a result of its instant popularity, Hitting the Nuts, is gaining some attention from distributors.

“It’s a new world now,” says Boyd. “We have had some offers, but we are still considering a strategy outside of the studio system while we shop it around.” The movie is planning on being released as a digital download via an iPhone and android app in April. “We’d love a traditional deal,” says Boyd, “but we have a window to try something rather innovative in the meantime to take advantage of this momentum.”

The movie has generated a lot of press in Europe, Asia and South America due to the popularity of poker worldwide. “Foreign markets are certainly in play with this movie,” says Boyd. “Anyone, anywhere who likes poker and comedy is going to want this movie.”
