Buro Happold Will Provide Multi-Disciplinary Engineering Services for World’s Greenest Skyscraper

New corporate headquarters will green the “Steel City;” Buro Happold will design MEP and structural engineering systems for the energy-efficient tower and perform daylight and energy modeling.

New York, NY, May 26, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Buro Happold announces that it is part of a design team for The Tower at PNC Plaza in Pittsburgh, PA; the global engineering firm will provide structural and MEP engineering services, as well as daylight and energy modeling. The 800,000-sq.-ft. high-rise will house PNC Financial Services Group, Inc.’s executive offices and is designed by Gensler. Construction on the 35- to 40-story tower is scheduled to begin in spring 2012 and completed in summer 2015. The team will strive to exceed LEED Platinum, the top USGBC rating.

The $400 million corporate headquarters will be located in the heart of the Golden Triangle, Pittsburgh’s downtown core. When built, it will be the world’s most environmentally friendly skyscraper at the same intersection where PNC has been headquartered for the last 150 years.

Buro Happold will work with the team to integrate energy-saving MEP and structural systems, such as:

· A state-of-the-art, high-efficiency heating and cooling system that uses advanced sensors and metering to deliver controlled air to specific building zones;
· Innovative, energy-saving and alternative sources of power, such as fuel cells, solar panels, and/or geothermal systems; and
· A high-tech façade that will enhance energy efficiency that allows natural airflow to the building and reduces cooling costs.

“Buro Happold is delighted to be selected as part of the design team for The Tower at PNC Plaza,” said Craig Schwitter, P.E., Regional Director, Buro Happold. “We are excited to bring our global expertise in high performance buildings to PNC’s corporate headquarters.”

“The client’s ambitious goals for this project closely align with Buro Happold’s commitment to advancing the state-of-the-art in green building design,” said Denzil Gallagher, Principal-in-Charge of MEP Engineering for the project for Buro Happold. “We are proud to use our deep resources to develop sophisticated MEP and structural systems that will benefit Pittsburgh and raise the bar for sustainable design around the world.”
