Caroline County, Virginia Local History Book Receives National Recognition

Memories of Union High Awarded Finalist by the 2012 National Indie Excellence Book Award

Bowling Green, VA, June 09, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Memories of Union High: An Oasis in Caroline County, Virginia 1903-1969 by Marion Woodfork Simmons was recognized as a Finalist in the African American Non-Fiction category by the National Indie Excellence Book Awards for 2012. This national award, based in Los Angeles, CA is open to all English language books including small presses, university presses, independent publishers and self-published authors. Works published in 2009, 2010 and 2011 were eligible for consideration.

The competition is judged by independent experts from all aspects of the indie book industry, including publishers, writers, editors, book cover designers and professional copywriters. They select award winners and finalists based on overall excellence of presentation.

Memories of Union High uses remembrances from alumni, faculty, family and friends; excerpts from school newspapers and yearbooks; and over 100 photographs and other memorabilia to preserve the history of Union High school in Caroline County, Virginia. The book is a fitting tribute to the people associated with the school and a good history lesson for those who are not familiar with the school.

Marion Woodfork Simmons is a family and community historian and owner of Woodfork Genealogy LLC. The mission of the company is to empower ordinary people to take an active role in preserving family and community history. In 2009, she initiated the Union High History Project to preserve the history of Caroline County Virginia’s only high school for Negroes during segregation. Memories of Union High is the end result of the project. Ms. Simmons frequently speaks to genealogy groups on the importance of preserving family and community history.
