Howard’s new horror fiction makes readers creepily realize that they never really notice their own shadows in this tale of a creature hungry for humans who’s been uprooted from his Yellowstone cavern of volcanic vents and hissing steam and has taken refuge in the nearby Old Faithful Inn.
Ranger Joe Rand has turned his passion for nature into a passion for booze after the recent death of his son, but when a local fireman falls into one of Yellowstone’s many ground holes and his body is found in the Old Faithful Inn deprived of all its fluids and badly mauled, Joe knows it’s time to act.
Joe discards his flask and with that Lieutenant Dale Caffey enters the hole the fireman had fallen into. They discover a series if interlinked tunnels lined with bones and the underground air still thick with smoke from the recent Yellowstone fire, the largest in the park’s history. The string of recent disappearances of hikers and campers in the park suddenly makes sense, but the subterranean creature has fled to escape the overwhelming smoke.
The creature has taken shelter inside the inn and is able to conceal itself within the building’s darkened crevices, but he emerges to feast on unsuspecting passersby. The park is evacuated, Joe and Dale lock themselves inside the inn and the horror of the shadow, its eyes full of malice and terror, stalks the two intrepid men.

Author Kevin Howard worked for Yellowstone National Park as part of his family’s tradition and he’s able to take his intimate knowledge of every steaming puddle of water, pool of bubbling mud and vent of volcanic heat and combine it with the eerie presence of an almost-seen shadow to keep his readers looking cautiously behind them every page they turn.
