Building Cleaning Services Says Mold Removal May Reduce Infant Asthma Risk

Building Cleaning Services, Inc, a company providing mold removal services for the Greater Los Angeles area, says that proper mold removal from residential homes can reduce the risk of asthma in infants.

Glendale, CA, February 24, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Building Cleaning Services, Inc. (BCS) (http://www.buildingcleaningservices.net), a company providing mold removal services for the Greater Los Angeles area, says that proper mold removal from residential homes can reduce the risk of asthma in infants. Approximately 7 million children in the U.S. have been diagnosed with asthma. The disease is a chronic respiratory condition that causes tightness in the chest, coughing and breathing difficulties due to swelling in the lung.

In a recent study partially funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), three types of mold were found to contribute to infant asthma: Aspergillus ochraceus, which produces food-contaminating mycotoxins (substances naturally produced by moulds and fungi that are normally present as some form of defense for the organism.), Aspergillus unguis, a less common species and Penicillium variabile (a type of mold). Molds grow where water is present, and are frequently found in homes damaged by water.

The 289 children involved in the study were 8 months of age when dust samples were collected from their homes. The NIEHS analyzed the dust for the 36 different types of molds listed in the Environmental Relative Moldiness Index (ERMI), as well as “endotoxin (a toxin kept "within" the bacterial cell and to be released only after destruction of the bacterial cell wall), house dust mite, cat, dog and cockroach allergens.” Following a second evaluation of the children at 7 years of age which included mold and aeroallergens skin prick testing for mold, 24% were diagnosed with asthma.

“It has been known for many years that mold is a hazardous substance that could potentially cause health issues in adults,” says Garrison Clarke, BCS Operations Manager. “The new NIEHS report clearly indicates that the health of all family members could be at risk when mold is present in a home.”

Clarke further states that there are various protocols that need to be followed when removing mold. The procedure that is used depends on how long the surfaces in a home have been wet. “Mold that has been growing for a week or more will require a more extensive removal process,” says Clarke.
