Doctors on the Medical Staff at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center Dive in the Water to Save Lives Through Swim Across America

“The Baylor Salmons” Near Goal of $25,000 to Benefit Swim Across America and the Innovative Clinical Trials Centers at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center

Dallas, TX, May 15, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Dr. Alan Miller, Chief of Oncology and Medical Director of Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas, and several other doctors are diving into their jobs – literally – to support Swim Across America (SAA), an open water swim that will benefit the Innovative Clinical Trials Center (ICTC) at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas.

"The Baylor Salmons," the team, headed by Miller and Dr. Carlos Becerra, director of the Innovative Clinical Trials Center, will join JaNeene Jones, vice president of oncology for Baylor Health Care System, and numerous employees of the Cancer Center, to swim in the Swim Across America - Dallas event to be to be held Saturday, June 8, 2013, at The Harbor at Lake Ray Hubbard.

“Through SAA, we can take an activity that we are so passionate about and use it to help others,” said Miller.

Not only do the doctors spend time outside of their busy work schedules to train for the swim, they also are raising money for the cause. This year, the team has set a goal to raise $25,000 and have currently raised more than $21,000. Last year, the team raised more than $21,000 for SAA.

“We can use this event to show our patients that we are in the fight against cancer with them and doing everything we can possibly do to beat this disease,” added Becerra, a master swimmer. “This is more than just a job for us; we are committed to raising awareness and finding a cure.”

Every member of the team will swim in the ½, 1, or 2-mile course and is encouraged to swim in honor of a cancer survivor or someone who has lost their battle with the disease. This year, Miller is swimming to honor a friend and former colleague who was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer more than fourteen years ago.

“Through the ICTC, we are pioneering advanced treatments based on a precision approach, targeting the tumor's weakness to improve the chances of everyone with cancer,” said Miller. “I swim in honor of my friend and her dedication to eradicating cancer, and will hopefully accelerate our efforts in this fight.”

In 2011, SAA – Dallas organizers pledged to raise $1 million in four years for Baylor Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas. The event, which has raised $600,000 in two years, is well on its way to fulfilling that pledge.
