Eye Associates of the South Warns About Wearing Sunglasses
Eye Associates of the South is raising public awareness about the vision risks to adults and children who do not wear sunglasses daily. Only about half of Americans wear sunglasses - and are even less likely to have their children wear them.
Bilxoi, MS, August 17, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The glorious sunshine also causes serious vision problems. Yet nearly half of Americans still do not habitually wear sunglasses.
Sunglasses should be worn year-round. As a public service, Eye Associates of the South in Biloxi (Miss.) is working to increase awareness of this potential danger to vision.
"When I look around on a sunny day, it is always surprising to me that about half of the people I see aren't wearing sunglasses. If you or your children go outdoors in the daytime, you should be wearing sunglasses – every time," said Rainna Bahadur, M.D., an ophthalmologist at Eye Associates of the South.
Only buy sunglasses with UV protection, the board-certified cornea specialist added.
Unprotected exposure to the sun's damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays can lead to serious short-and long-term vision problems – such as cataracts, macular degeneration (which can cause blindness), abnormal eye growths and cancer.
Nearly half of Americans still do not habitually wear sunglasses - and are even less likely to have their children do so, a new Vision Council report says.
Only 12 percent of adults rank UV protection as a first concern when buying sunglasses. More than half of parents said their children don't wear sunglasses, yet children receive three times more sun exposure than adults, the report said.
If you wear eyeglasses, it is a good investment to buy corrective sunglasses or, at least, clip-on sunglasses so it is easier to protect your eyes, added Joel Knight, M.D., also an ophthalmologist at Eye Associates of the South, which is the largest eye care practice in the Gulf Coast region.
If you buy over-the-counter sunglasses, be careful about buying off brands from overseas. Just because sunglasses have a UV protection sticker on them does not mean they really have protective UV lenses. Buy a trusted brand with UV protection, Knight advised.
