Dr. Paul M. Parker Weighs in as Congress Introduces Bill to Educate Cancer Patients About Breast Reconstruction Options
Paramus, NJ, October 08, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The U.S. Congress has introduced a bill that would create a national campaign to educate breast cancer patients on their options for breast reconstruction. The Breast Cancer Patient Education Act of 2013 is being sponsored by Sherrod Brown and Roy Blunt in the Senate, and Leonard Lance Donna Christensen in the House of Representatives.

Federal law dictates that breast reconstruction and prostheses must be covered under health insurance for breast cancer patients, but recent studies have found that many women - and minority women in particular - are not informed of their options or referred to a plastic surgeon. The bills, which are currently being reviewed by legislative committees, would direct the Department of Health and Human Services distribute educational materials to these patients.

“Breast cancer patients deserve our full support,” said Dr. Paul M. Parker, Medical Director at the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery. “Part of the mission here at our clinic is to make sure that those fighting and recovering from this disease are empowered to make fully informed decisions about their health and future.”

For patients, breast reconstruction is possible during the mastectomy or at any time after the procedure has taken place. Prosthetic devices and breast forms are also treatment options for those who do not wish to have implants. The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 requires the procedures to be covered under health insurance plans.

The progress of bills H.R. 1984 and S. 931 can be tracked online via the Library of Congress’ website at thomas.loc.gov.
