Zero Budget Film "The Last Man on Earth" Gets Worldwide Premiere

The Last Man On Earth is being released March 7, 2014 on Vimeo on Demand. Going against Hollywood tradition, it was made for nothing, and will be available to a global audience simultaneously.

Hollywood, CA, February 27, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Visionary Films will release “The Last Man On Earth,” starring Madisen Hill (Live Life and Win) and Trip Langley (Choose). It premieres through Vimeo On Demand (vimeo.com/ondemand/thelastman). Their direct distribution model delivers the title globally, enabling audiences immediate and convenient access to non-traditional Hollywood fare. This method of reaching viewers, outside the studio machine, is helping to fuel the next wave of diverse independent filmmaking.

“Vimeo is the quality open platform for creators to distribute directly to their audiences,” said Vimeo CEO, Kerry Trainor. “Direct digital distribution is gaining momentum every day as both an alternative and a complement to traditional film distribution.”

Writer/Director Todd Portugal got the idea to make a movie for nothing when he realized he had never heard of anyone making a film for exactly $0. He wanted to prove that movie making doesn’t have to cost a lot, or anything. During production, the Polish Brothers released a similar zero budget film “For Lovers Only.” Portugal was undaunted. “Having significant filmmakers interested in exploring this type of filmmaking makes it all the more viable,” said Portugal.

He was able to eliminate costs in part by the fact that he already owned a Red camera and thereby wouldn’t have to pay for film stock or lab fees. Red digital cameras have been used on some of the biggest blockbusters, and can now claim the full spectrum of budgets after being used on an absolutely no cost film.

Portugal enlisted the help of friend Bruce Malm, as the location sound mixer, bringing the crew total to two. The two-cast/two-crew team was instructed to “brown bag it” since there was no money for catering. The cast also provided their own wardrobe and did their own makeup. Armed only with his camera and his script, Portugal shot around Los Angeles over the course of two weeks.

According to Portugal, “with this kind of project the focus really becomes the story. It’s a form of a cinema where you strip the cinematic to its very basic principles, putting the story front and center. In an age where the studios are making more and more increasingly expensive movies, it’s a logical antithesis to create these reductive, very pure motion picture expressions.”

Uniquely blending romantic comedy & science fiction, “The Last Man On Earth” is about two teenagers exploring the nature, and rejection of first love, when a cataclysmic event leaves them inexplicably stranded and alone. If they can each find a way to understand one another, then they might just have a chance at survival.

“The Last Man On Earth” will be available for $1.99 to rent and $7.99 to own. View the trailer and purchase the movie at vimeo.com/ondemand/thelastman.
