For a list of banned books go to the Banned Books Week website www.bannedbooksweek.org.

Banned Books Week is held yearly during the last week of September. It was created to make people aware of the value of free and open information. The entire book community from “librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers” come together to support the freedom to seek and to express ideas of all types.

The main focus of Banned Books Week is to “draw national attention to the harms of censorship.” Even though many of the banned books have been censored most of them are continually made available to the public. Banned Books Week started in 1982 out of a response from a wide number of books being challenged in schools, bookstores and libraries. Since 1982, more than 11,300 books have been challenged.
