Cincinnati, OH, October 10, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Six Month Epidemic Continues to Escalate in West Africa.

Matthew 25: Ministries, an international humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization located in Cincinnati, OH is sending a container of supplies to Liberia to help combat the spread of the Ebola virus, to assist with recovery and to provide care to children left orphaned by the disease.

Liberia has the most cases and deaths to date and the number of cases is rising rapidly. There is almost no medical system structure in Liberia and the need for beds, supplies and staff have completely outstripped the fragile capabilities. Potentially infected people contaminate public transportation and spread the disease as they criss-cross the capital of Monrovia looking for an available hospital bed. When patients are turned away from treatment centers, they return to their communities where they infect others. The progression of the disease is intensified by the overall lack of healthcare and general lack of proper nutrition. The epidemic has already claimed approximately 2,500 lives in Liberia.

Ebola is a rare and deadly disease caused by infection with one of the ebola viruses and is spread by direct contact with a sick person’s blood or body fluids. It is also spread by direct contact with objects that have been contaminated with infected body fluids.

WHO predicts as many as 20,000 people will be infected by early November. Currently, more than half of those infected have been dying. Children are especially struggling as a result of the epidemic. If their parents have died from the virus, they are abandoned due to fear of infection. If they have recovered from the virus, they are ostracized due to the stigma attached to the virus and a fear that they can still infect others.

Matthew 25: Ministries is responding with a shipment of products including medical supplies, gloves and masks, hand sanitizer, sanitary pads, diapers, blankets, bulk rice and Matthew 25’s nutritionally enhanced rice/soy meals.

“Through the generosity of our corporate donors, we are fortunate to have many of the most desperately needed supplies available at our facility,” said Matthew 25: Ministries’ Founder and President, Reverend Wendell Mettey. “The need for these products in Liberia is critical and will help local health facilities and professionals to combat this terrible epidemic.”

In 2014, Matthew 25: Ministries’ Disaster Response Program has responded to disasters including the chemical spill in West Virginia, tornadoes in Nebraska, Arkansas and Mississippi and derecho wind damage in Arkansas with more than 30 truckloads of aid. Additionally, Matthew 25 continues to ship aid to victims of the Philippines typhoon. Matthew 25: Ministries is constantly monitoring its readiness to meet the needs of a disaster and is prepared to respond to crises domestically and internationally where the magnitude of the disaster taxes the capabilities of local and regional relief organizations or where on-the-ground partners request assistance.
