2015 St. Jude Dream Home in Biloxi Brings Energy Efficiency to New Level Along the MS Gulf Coast

The 2015 St. Jude Dream Home built by Elliott Homes LLC for the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway has been rated the tightest for air leakage in South Mississippi to date.

Gulfport, MS, April 02, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Elliott Homes LLC donated the land for the 2015 St. Jude Dream Home and with help from businesses near and far, has created an airtight, energy-efficient home. Foamman Insulation LLC is just one of the many generous businesses that have donated materials, labor and the know-how to make the home almost free to St. Jude and as energy efficient to the winning homeowner as possible. “I was determined to build one of the most energy efficient Dream Homes to help homeowners with their energy bills. We all put our heads together and have built a record breaking energy efficient home for South Mississippi,” states Brandon Elliott, President of Elliott Homes LLC.

Biloxi is the first city to adopt the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code in Mississippi. “Among other things, this code requires every home to be tested to see how “leaky” it is, in other words how much air is seeping out of the home. The leakier the home, the more energy it uses, the more issues it has with Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and the greater maintenance required,” states Tobias Torjusen of Coastal Energy Advisor.

To measure the amount of leakage in a home a tool called a blower door, which is comprised of a calibrated fan, a mounting system to attach the fan to an exterior door, and a manometer which measures pressure is used. The Blower Door Test simulates 20 mph winds on the external walls, roof, and floor, if raised. Our climate zone requires that every home tested score a 5 ACH50 or less. ACH stands for air changes per hour. “A typical existing home might leak at a rate of 15 air changes per hour, which is written as 15 ACH50. So the new code is requiring homes to be much more energy efficient, and healthier for that matter,” adds Torjusen.

“We know that the tighter a home, the more efficient it can be, when the proper HVAC (air conditioner) is selected and installed. The St. Jude Dream Home was tested at 0.97 ACH50! This means it will have less than 20% of the air leakage than a new home built to code. Imagine a home with no drafts, no hot or cold spots, less maintenance, healthier air quality, all while costing less on energy costs. That is what a high performance home delivers,” explains Torjusen.

Tickets for the 2015 St. Jude Dream Home, valued at more than $450,000, are available at www.stjude.org or at the home itself on the weekends until the giveaway on April 12th. The home is located directly behind Elliott Homes’ model home in their exclusive Malpass West community in Biloxi, Mississippi. The address is: 703 Malpass Landing Dr., Biloxi, Mississippi 39532.
