Tigerlily Foundation President and Breast Cancer Advocate, Maimah Karmo, Featured by Oprah Winfrey on OWN TV

Tigerlily Foundation is excited that its President and Breast Cancer Advocate, Maimah Karmo, was featured by Oprah Winfrey on OWN TV's "Where Are They Now," highlighting the organization's work supporting young women - before, during and after breast cancer.

Reston, VA, October 01, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Tigerlily Foundation’s President and Founder, Maimah Karmo was featured on the September 17th episode of Oprah Winfrey Network’s (OWN) “Were are They Now.” The feature highlighted Maimah’s and Tigerlily Foundation’s progress since her first appearance in 2008.

Oprah first sat down with Maimah eight years ago, when she was featured alongside actress Christina Applegate, also a breast cancer survivor. Oprah shared Maimah’s story about being diagnosed with breast cancer, starting Tigerlily Foundation while undergoing chemotherapy treatment and growing it into a nationwide breast cancer advocacy organization focused on educating, advocating for, empowering and supporting young women – before, during and after breast cancer.

Maimah was 32 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She found a lump in her breast during a regular breast self examination, and went to see a breast surgeon, who told her that she was “too young” to get breast cancer. After pushing for a biopsy, Maimah was diagnosed with aggressive, triple negative breast cancer. After her second treatment, she decided that she would use her experience to help an underserved demographic – young women.

What began as a way to share her experience to raise awareness of young women and breast cancer has grown into a nationwide organization providing girls and young women, offering programs focused on prevention, healthy lifestyle, support, empowerment, survivorship and quality of life. Some of Tigerlily Foundation’s key programs include its Hope Bag Program, New You Journal, Metastatic Young (MY) Living in Focus Empowered (LIFE) Program, Twitter Chats, Pink Power Alerts, Healthcare Provider Program, Funds for Families Program, At Home Program, New Normal Program, Send Me On Vacation Program and international outreach initiatives. In addition, the organization hosts special events, including Pajama Glam Party, created by Maimah’s daughter, Noelle, when she was six years old, as a way to educate young girls about prevention, health and wellness; Young Women’s Breast Health Day on the Hill – an annual advocacy day on Capitol Hill; and its annual fundraising gala, EmPOWER Ball.

Since appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Maimah has been invited to the White House, most recently to support First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Initiative. She has worked to pass two pieces of legislation – the Breast Cancer Education and Awareness Requires Learning Young (EARLY) Act, which was introduced by Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz; and the Protecting Access to Lifesaving Screenings (PALS) Act, introduced by Representative Renee Ellmers and Representative Wasserman Schultz . Maimah also wrote a best-selling memoir, Fearless: Awakening to My Life’s Purpose Through Breast Cancer; and she publishes a quarterly digital magazine, Bliss Magazine. In addition, she sits on the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women.

"It's incredible to see how much Tigerlily Foundation has grown. I remember laying in bed during treatment, when I first had the vision to start the organization. I'm so thankful to all of the volunteers, Board Members, partners and people like Oprah Winfrey, who have believed in me. I'm excited about the future and about reaching young women around the world." Tigerlily Foundation has developed partnerships with global corporate brands such as Shea Moisture, L’Oreal Women of Worth, Saks Fifth Avenue and Hologic, as well as pharmaceutical companies to include Celgene, Celldex, Eisai, Genentech, Merck, Pfizer and Tesaro. In addition, Tigerlily partners with hospitals, healthcare and breast cancer advocacy organizations nationally on various initiatives. Since its inception, Tigerlily has reached millions of women through its programs, and impacted the lives of young breast cancer survivors nationally and globally.
