Red Giant Entertainment Eyes Hemp Paper for Comic Book Printing

REDG explores using legal hemp paper for production in Absolute Comics Group line.

Orlando, FL, May 18, 2017 --(PR.com)-- Red Giant Entertainment Inc. (REDG), an innovative Intellectual Property company specializing in high quality characters and content for use in a variety of media and entertainment, today announced that it is actively exploring the use of hemp-based paper for the printing of their upcoming Absolute Comics Group line of comic books.

“As many know, I owned a China-based printing company for nearly two decades, but I’ve always had a strong desire to move away from trees as a paper source and find a more cost-effective, sustainable, and American-based solution,” said Benny Powell, current CEO of Red Giant. “Hemp paper has always been the most logical solution, but due to legal issues, it has not been a viable option. Now with legislation in many states changing, like Red Giant itself, the time feels right for hemp to make the biggest comeback in history.”

Before hemp was effectively prohibited in the United States during the 1950s, it had been grown for at least the last 12,000 years for use in textiles and paper. The King James Bible and Gutenberg Bible were written on hemp paper. Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on hemp paper. The complete works of Mark Twain, Alexander Dumas, Victor Hugo, plus Lewis Carroll's beloved Alice in Wonderland – all were written on hemp paper!

“Not only is hemp eco-friendly and sustainable, it may provide a lower-cost option than tree-based paper,” said David Campiti, COO of Red Giant. “And lower printing costs for us means lower cover prices on our books, which also means more copies sold… wouldn’t that be nice?”

Hemp paper’s illegal status seems to be a strange case of bad science in government. Hemp is a distinct plant variety of cannabis that is related to marijuana. Due to its relation and similar leaf shape, hemp is frequently confused with marijuana, however, hemp contains virtually no THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. Hemp cannot be used as a drug because it produces virtually no THC (less than 1%), whereas marijuana produces up to 20% THC.

Because hemp is a fast-growing, thick, fibrous plant, its production provides a clean, infinitely renewable source that can be used to produce cheap, domestic paper for production – while helping reduce deforestation.

Added Powell, “We do not wish to politicize nor promote the use of marijuana in any way. We simply want to offer a great product that is good for the planet and that helps lower the costs to our consumers. If we can help pave the way for others in our industry, perhaps we can broaden the reach of our medium, while helping the planet at the same time.”
