AEE, Energy Blockchain Consortium to Explore Opportunities, Benefits, Challenges of Blockchain for Advanced Energy Industry

Joint efforts begin Sept. 26 with webinar exploring potential in wholesale market, distribution system, and behind-the-meter applications.

Washington, DC, August 30, 2018 --(PR.com)-- National business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) and the Energy Blockchain Consortium (EBC) have announced an agreement to work together to explore the application of blockchain technology to the advanced energy industry. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two organizations identifies reports and convenings as two possible ways to gather and share information with industry stakeholders, regulators, and the public about ways that the distributed digital ledger technology could be used to facilitate the adoption and growth of advanced energy technologies.

“Blockchain is an important new technology that could change the way advanced energy companies and customers engage,” said Lisa Frantzis, senior vice president, 21st Electricity System, AEE. “I look forward to working with Energy Blockchain Consortium to explore the opportunities and the implications for businesses and regulators.”

“Energy in general, and advanced energy in particular, are ripe for blockchain to facilitate transactions in novel ways,” said Tony Giroti, chairman, EBC. “Advanced Energy Economy is the perfect partner to help us discover, illuminate, and pursue the possibilities.”

As a first shared endeavor, AEE and EBC will present a free industry webinar entitled Blockchain in Advanced Energy – Applications, Opportunities, and Challenges on Sept. 26, 2018, at 1 p.m. EDT/10 a.m. PDT. In this webinar, panelists will discuss blockchain in wholesale market, distribution system, and behind-the-meter applications. Participants will gain a basic understanding of this distributed digital ledger technology and its potential uses in advanced energy, including examples from current pilot projects. Potential policy and regulatory issues that need to be addressed as blockchain is introduced in energy markets will also be covered.

Lisa Frantzis of AEE will serve as moderator. Panelists include Tony Giroti of EBC; Doug McMahon, VP of Strategy, New York Power Authority; and Luke Scheidler, Senior Manager, Itron.

This free webinar is open to the public.
