West Houston Lacrosse Association and Nation United Foundation Hosting the WHLA Summer Camp to Promote Diversity in Lacrosse

Houston, TX, July 09, 2019 --(PR.com)-- West Houston Lacrosse Association and Nation United Foundation are hosting the WHLA Summer Camp to promote diversity in lacrosse this July 29-August 1 in Houston.

Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the US. African-Americans currently represent 14.5% of the US population, yet represent only 3.5% of college lacrosse players. Nation United Foundation strives to close this gap such that minority participation in lacrosse proportionately represents the population.

The WHLA Summer Camp, through grants and donations, will provide 60 sets of equipment for boys and girls 4th-12th to try the sport and enjoy a fun summer camp experience.

In addition to lacrosse skill and team instruction, the WHLA Summer Camp will feature presentations, coaches, and speakers on leadership, nutrition, training, and the NCAA scholarship process. Speakers and coaches will include Sterlyn Ardrey (Hofstra University ‘22, Nation United Ambassador), Eli Ensor (Ohio State ‘23, Nation United Ambassador), Jenny Collins-Vela (Nation United Women’s Coach and Mentoring Program Director), Chloe Hunter (Nation United Ambassador, Adrenaline All-American, Senior UA All-American, University of Pennsylvania ‘23), Haylie Sims (Nation United Ambassador, Kinkaid School ‘20), and camp director Mike Song (Korean National Team, World Games ‘02, Westside HS Head Coach and ‘19 THSLL Coach of the Year, University of Houston Asst. Coach), just to name a few.

“Like any sport, lacrosse offers leadership development and college scholarships, and members of all communities should have equal exposure to such opportunities,” says camp director Mike Song. “Our initiatives with Nation United Foundation seek to ensure those opportunities are proactively provided and available to our minority youth. I’m excited for this camp, which will be a fun, wholesome lacrosse experience for all!”

“We are excited to work with WHLA to continue the Nation United’s efforts to promote diversity in lacrosse and encourage standards of diversity in lacrosse and sport overall,” comments Jeremy Ardrey, director of Programs & Outreach for Nation United Lacrosse Club and president of Nation United Foundation. “Nation United Ambassadors are great role models who serve as change agents in their communities, schools and the sports they play. We are excited to have them also serve as a source of inspiration for the youth of Houston’s growing lacrosse community.”

The WHLA Summer Camp will be held Monday through Thursday July 29 - August 1, 2019 at West Briar Middle School for boys 4th-12th grades. The camp includes morning and evening sessions each day, 9:00am-11:00am and 5:00pm-7:30pm.
