Brain Exercises from MindFit Brain Gym Software Are Scientifically Proven to Improve Cognitive Skills

MindFit, a brain training PC software package has been shown to be more effective in improving cognitive skills, thereby combating the effects of brain aging, than other computer games by results of a clinical study into brain training software delivered at the eight international Alzheimer's conference in Salzburg, Austria.

Oxford, United Kingdom, April 23, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Brain aging experts and leading Alzheimer's Disease scientists at the eight International Alzheimer's Disease/Parkinson's Disease Conference in Salzburg, Austria were presented with evidence that MindFit brain training PC software improves the cognitive functions of people over 50, often referred to as "baby-boomers". This was demonstrated by a two year long study conducted in Tel-Aviv, Israel in which the participants were asked to spend 30 minutes, three times a week playing either MindFit brain training games or other computer games that also exercised a range of cognitive skills, for a period of three months. This study into the efficacy of brain training software was particularly stringent, as it was a "double-blind" experiment; when the results were analysed, the scientists did not know whether they had come from a person doing brain exercises with MindFit or playing the other computer games, which reduced the chance of bias creeping in and skewing the results. This study should play an important part in advancing the debate about how pc-based "brain gyms" can actually stave off the effects of the aging brain and resulting cognitive decline. It demonstrated that users of the MindFit brain training software showed significant improvements in the areas of visuo-spatial learning, spatial short term memory and focused attention, more so than users of the other types of computer games. Of particular interest is that participants who began the study with a lower baseline performance in cognitive tasks showed greater improvement than those who began the study with normal cognitive function. This suggests that those who are already suffering from cognitive decline can benefit from using MindFit as part of their cognitive rehabilitation.

The MindFit brain exercise program is available from MindWeavers, an Oxford based brain training software company personally supported by Baroness Greenfield, leading neuroscientist and Director of the Royal Institution.
