Primerica Offers Tips to Save Cash at the Pump

Duluth, GA, September 13, 2008 --(PR.com)-- This summer, average gas prices spiked to more than four dollars a gallon – a record high.(1) In fact, a recent survey showed that 62% of respondents changed their holiday travel plans and 15% cancelled their vacations altogether.(2)

Primerica, a financial solutions industry leader, offers four easy tips for avoiding the pinch at the pump.

Keep it light. Extra weight can really hike up gas costs. Every extra 100 pounds cuts fuel economy by 2%. Also, avoid packing items on the vehicle’s roof – this cuts fuel economy by about 21%. The rooftop racks themselves slash economy by about 1%.

Know when to cruise. Using cruise control in areas of heavy traffic, bad weather, and hilly roads can actually cause drivers to use more fuel, not less, as the vehicle struggles to maintain speed. However, if a driver navigates over flat terrain at higher speeds, cruise control can boost fuel economy by 10 to 15 percent – and helps prevent “speed creep,” the tendency to drive gradually faster.

Don’t get stuck. As much as possible, try to plan trips to avoid hitting traffic in big cities during rush hour. Have alternate routes in mind in case traffic backs up. Getting stuck in traffic wastes a lot of fuel, and driving a bit out of the way can use less fuel than a straight crawl. Take it easy on the pedals as well. Aggressive driving (rapid acceleration and hard braking) cuts fuel economy by about 25%.

Earn some extra cash. Costs are rising across the board so if the additional pinch at the pump has families feeling a little out of control, why not make some extra money part‑time?* A few extra dollars each month can go a long way to relieving the financial pressure of increased costs.

Business opportunities, such as Primerica’s part‑ or full‑time opportunity, are great ways to do something enjoyable while padding the bank account. More information is available here: www.PrimericaBusinessOpportunity.com.
