In the same way that Internet social networking software is influencing campaign fundraising this election, a Silicon Valley company hopes its technology helps campaigns reach the 20% of American residents that speak a language other than English in their home, and the hard of hearing.
In an election year where every voter is important, Tertia (www.tertia.us) has made its technology available to campaigns so that their videos can be quickly captioned, and made available to translators for rapid response translation into key languages like Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, German, Japanese, French, Korean, and Vietnamese.
Headed by CEO Michael Novak, the former president of the largest intercultural communications company in the U.S., it also presents the videos in a bilingual format that should please the “English only” voting block as well as the “native language” voting population. The site is unique as it is the only place where Obama videos with captions can be found for the 11% of hearing impaired Americans, and in languages including Chinese, French, German, Korean, Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, and Japanese.
“Campaigns spend a lot of money for broadcast videos, but often ignore the opportunities that the latest technology can do to quickly caption those videos for Internet-based delivery in all relevant languages. So we’ve done our best to demonstrate that through this site” Novak said.
In addition to speeches, some select music videos in support of Obama's have been posted and translated as well. Most recently, Grammy award-winning artist Dave’s Stewart’s strong musical message, “An American Prayer”, (www.myamericanprayer.com) was translated into various languages. New content is being posted as quickly as volunteer translators respond.
The archive of videos is on YouTube on channel captionedforobama and there are more formats on the main website (including ones optimized for ipods).
“In this election the ability to reach second language speakers is really important so we’re doing what we can to support Barack Obama's message to everyone,” said Novak.
