The 2nd Annual New Mexico Shootout Closes with a Bang

The New Mexico Shootout is a unique professional golf match featuring some of the most renowned members of the Ladies Professional Golf Tour.

Albuquerque, NM, September 19, 2008 --(PR.com)-- By the time the hot New Mexico sun tucked it’s radiance behind Turtleback Mountain, the 2nd Annual New Mexico Shootout once again declared the winners. In an action packed day full of brilliant shot making and gutty performances the team of Nancy Lopez and Rosie Jones prevailed over their tough competitors Kristi Albers and Alena Sharp.

The annual golf match at the Sierra del Rio golf course located in breathtaking Turtleback Mountain Resort started off extremely competitive. The new young gun Alena Sharp demonstrated her short game wizardry with a remarkable approach shot on hole #1 draining the putt to take an early one up lead on Team Sierra (Lopez/Jones). The team of Albers and Sharp (Team Zia) halved the next two holes until Sharp struck again. Alena drained an awkward downhill 15’ slider to give Team Zia a two up lead against the defending champions.

The match came to the par 5 9th hole, a great driving hole in its own right measuring 570 yards. With Team Zia two up, both teams had legitimate tries for birdie. Both Jones and Sharp dropped their birdie putts to halve the hole and finish the front nine with Team Sierra two down to Team Zia.

The action continued on the back nine with a very tight match going into the par 4,13th where Alena Sharp began a dazzling display of golf. After walking off the 13th hole with another birdie, Sharp eagled the par 5, 14th hole and made another birdie on the par 4, 15th hole to give her and Kristi a solid three up lead with three to go.

Standing on the 16th tee, the dynamic duo Nancy Lopez and Rosie Jones found themselves three down to a hungry team Zia looking to finish strong. It was a classic showdown giving the hundreds of followers the storyline and action they came to see. Nancy Lopez carded her third birdie on the back nine to shrink the lead. With a roar of the crowd, the momentum shifted to the defending champs. On the 17th hole, it was Nancy’s teammate Rosie Jones who cashed in with a 2 on the par 3 sending roars skyward to the tip of Turtleback Mountain. Both teams came to the par 4, finishing hole measuring just south of 440 yards, worth $17,000. Winning this hole would determine who would hoist the 2008 New Mexico Shootout Championship Title.

Team Sierra and Team Zia both parred the 18th hole, forcing a chip off for the second year in a row. It was Rosie Jones from Team Sierra who shot the final bullet by chipping to within 3’ 8” giving her and partner Nancy Lopez the title yet again.

About The Shootout

World Golf Hall of Fame member and Roswell native Nancy Lopez and Albuquerque’s own Rosie Jones successfully defended their title at this year’s New Mexico Shootout.

The second annual New Mexico Shootout was held at Sierra del Rio Championship Golf Course at Turtleback Mountain Resort on Friday September 5th in Elephant Butte, NM. It was presented and sponsored in part by the New Mexico Tourism Department. The Shootout is the only event in New Mexico that features four premiere members of the Ladies Professional Golf Association, all of whom have close ties to New Mexico.

World Golf Hall of Fame golfer Kathy Whitworth, winner of more tournaments than any other male or female professional golfer in history, hosted the Shootout Clinic.

Proceeds from The New Mexico Shootout support Sierra Vista Hospital, located in nearby Truth or Consequences. The hospital has recently begun a capital campaign aimed at raising $15 million to build a new facility that will provide up-to-date health care and state-of-the-art medical technology for Sierra County’s growing population as well as visitors.

The 2007 event had record crowds nearing 4,000, making it the largest single day golf event in the State’s history. Spectators were treated to an exciting match that was tied after 18 holes and won in a chip off when Lopez chipped to within a foot at the 18th hole. This year’s event proved to just as exciting as some of the greatest names in women’s golf battled it out in a two-team better ball 18 hole match format.

Sierra del Rio was recognized by Golf Digest as one of America’s best remodeled courses in 2007.
