)-- The N.C. Department of Transportation has announced that it will temporarily reduce a half-mile section of northbound U.S. 1/64 to one lane at the Tryon Road overpass, beginning Friday, May 19, at 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., Monday, May 22, weather permitting.
The lane closure will allow for additional paving of the northbound lanes. Motorists should expect delays and are advised to take an alternate route.
The U.S. 1/64 widening project is a $58 million project to improve U.S. 1/64 from south of the I-40 interchange to the U.S. 64/Tryon Road interchange in Cary. The project is anticipated to be complete in late 2006, weather permitting.
The NCDOT reminds motorists to stay alert, obey the posted speed limit of 55 mph, be aware of construction workers and watch signs for construction information. The fine for speeding in the work zone is $250 and violators may receive three driver license points.
