Local Designer Unites Charleston’s Fashion Set for Women’s Cause

Katherine McDonald, the owner and designer of local fashion label LulaKate, decided to premiere her fall collection in a recession-conscious style. She will be hosting a trunk show and donating 25% of the revenue to Dress For Success of Charleston. DFS is an organization that provides disadvantaged women with the wardrobe and skills needed to acquire a job. The event is happening Wednesday, October 29, from 5:00-8:00pm in LulaKate’s flagship boutique at 324 King Street.

As an entrepreneur herself, McDonald understands the challenges that women face when entering the workforce. She started LulaKate out of her King Street apartment in 2003 with little more than $300 and a dream, and accredits her perseverance to the encouragement of friends and family. For every happy ending like this, however, there are a hundred women still struggling to succeed. “While everyone is affected in this economy, these women have no safety net to fall back on,” she says, which is why the employment services and emotional support that DFS provides are so crucial right now.

McDonald emphasizes that in this inclement economy it is important to support our own, stating “we all need to do our part to keep the Charleston community strong, and if helping includes looking great and having fun then all the better.” She has faith in the generosity of the city’s best dressed, and predicts that customers will receive double enjoyment out of their purchases knowing that they are helping other local women to dress for success.

Despite the seriousness of the cause, McDonald hopes the evening will live up to the label’s “Fabulous, Fun and Flirty” motto. In addition to the exclusive first look at LulaKate’s latest collection, the event will feature style tips from Lee Heyward of Charleston Style Concierge, champagne and dessert. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet some of the inspiring women who have changed there lives with the help of DFS. The glamorous evening is designed to encourage longtime customers and newcomers alike to grab a friend and head to LulaKate for a new wardrobe and a great cause.

LulaKate is a contemporary women’s apparel label based in Charleston, South Carolina. The label is renowned for its classic styles and unique prints. LulaKate designs and manufactures four ready-to-wear collections a year and has a line of made-to-order bridesmaid and cocktail dresses.
